ATC SCM50ASL Three-Way Active Speakers with Stands

ATC SCM50ASL Three-Way Active Speakers with Stands

Audio T Verdict

The ATC SCM50ASL is a reference three-way active loudspeaker that combines studio-monitor accuracy with the finish and presentation required for a serious domestic music system.

Each speaker contains a dedicated amplifier for its bass, midrange and high-frequency driver, producing 350W of carefully matched tri-amplification. ATC’s active crossover divides the signal before amplification, allowing the electronics and drive units to operate as one integrated system.

The 234mm Super Linear bass driver delivers impressive weight and control, but the renowned 75mm soft-dome midrange remains the defining element. Voices and instruments are reproduced with exceptional clarity, tonal accuracy and freedom from obvious colouration.

A suitable pre-amplifier or source with a properly controlled variable output is required. Each speaker also needs its own mains connection and balanced XLR signal cable.

ATC SCM50ASL Active Speakers

The ATC SCM50ASL is a three-way active loudspeaker system supplied as a stereo pair with matching 250mm stands, fabric-wrapped grilles and adjustable floor spikes.

Each cabinet combines ATC’s 234mm Super Linear bass driver, SM75-150S 75mm soft-dome midrange and 25mm high-frequency driver with a dedicated three-channel amplifier pack and electronic crossover.

The monitor-style cabinet brings technology developed for ATC’s professional studio systems into a furniture-grade design intended for high-performance domestic listening.

What Is an Active Loudspeaker?

An active loudspeaker contains its own power amplifiers and electronic crossover, removing the need for a separate stereo power amplifier.

The incoming line-level signal is divided into bass, midrange and high-frequency bands before amplification. Each frequency band is then sent to an amplifier connected directly to its corresponding drive unit.

This allows ATC to design and match the crossover, amplifiers and drivers as a complete system rather than relying on the customer to select a separate power amplifier.

A Pre-Amplifier or Variable Output Is Required

The SCM50ASL does not provide source selection or a conventional listening-volume control.

Connect the speakers to a suitable pre-amplifier, streamer or DAC with a safe and properly controlled variable analogue output. A fixed-level source must not be connected directly.

350W Tri-Amplification in Each Speaker

Each SCM50ASL contains three individually matched MOSFET amplifier channels.

  • Bass amplifier: 200W RMS
  • Midrange amplifier: 100W RMS
  • High-frequency amplifier: 50W RMS

The combined amplifier output is 350W per speaker, with power distributed according to the requirements of each drive unit rather than being shared through a conventional passive crossover.

Active FET momentary gain reduction provides overload protection during excessive signal peaks while helping the system remain controlled.

ATC 75mm Soft-Dome Midrange

ATC’s handmade SM75-150S 75mm soft-dome midrange is central to the SCM50ASL’s performance.

A dedicated midrange driver reproduces much of the vocal and instrumental spectrum without also being required to generate deep bass.

This helps voices, strings, guitars, brass and percussion retain their natural tone, texture and intelligibility as recordings become more complex or playback levels increase.

Its broad and controlled dispersion also supports stable stereo imaging across a useful listening area.

234mm Super Linear Bass Driver

Low frequencies are reproduced by ATC’s substantial 234mm bass driver, powered directly by its dedicated 200W amplifier.

Super Linear Magnet technology is designed to reduce magnetic distortion within the drive system, helping the speaker combine powerful bass with accurate pitch, timing and low-level detail.

The enhanced port profile and substantial motor assembly allow the SCM50ASL to reach 38Hz at the stated minus 6dB point.

ATC 25mm High-Frequency Driver

High frequencies are handled by ATC’s 25mm driver, powered by its own 50W amplifier.

Separating the high-frequency amplifier from the bass and midrange channels helps preserve fine detail during demanding musical peaks.

ATC matches the response of the speakers to within approximately 0.5dB, supporting precise stereo imaging and consistent tonal balance across the pair.

Active Electronic Crossover

The active crossover divides the incoming signal at 380Hz and 3.5kHz before it reaches the three amplifier channels.

ATC uses a wide-bandwidth electronically balanced input stage with high common-mode rejection and very low distortion.

Because the crossover operates at line level, it avoids placing the large inductors and capacitors of a conventional high-power passive crossover between the amplifiers and drive units.

Balanced XLR Inputs

Each speaker provides a balanced XLR line-level input with a sensitivity of 1V and an input impedance greater than 10k ohms.

A stereo installation therefore requires two signal cables, one running from the controlling pre-amplifier or source to each speaker.

Balanced connections are particularly useful where the speakers are positioned several metres away from the source equipment, helping reduce susceptibility to electrical interference.

Matching ATC Pre-Amplifiers

The ATC SCA2 reference pre-amplifier is the natural high-level partner, providing balanced source inputs and balanced XLR outputs suitable for longer cable runs.

The more compact ATC CA2 Mk2 pre-amplifier provides analogue source selection, volume control, record playback and headphone listening.

A compatible streamer or DAC with a high-quality variable output can also be connected directly, provided its output level, volume behaviour and connection requirements are fully understood.

A Streamlined Reference System

Because the power amplification is built into the speakers, the SCM50ASL can form a high-performance system using relatively few separate components.

A suitable streaming pre-amplifier can provide music streaming, digital conversion, source selection and volume control, with balanced analogue cables running directly to the speakers.

Audio T Bristol explored this approach using ATC SCM50 active speakers with a Linn Selekt DSM Organik streaming system .

38Hz to 25kHz Frequency Response

ATC specifies a frequency response extending from 38Hz to 25kHz at the stated minus 6dB points.

The SCM50ASL is designed to produce substantial but controlled low frequencies rather than relying on an exaggerated tonal balance to create the impression of scale.

The ported cabinet and dedicated bass amplification provide greater low-frequency extension than ATC’s smaller Entry Series active speakers.

112dB Maximum Continuous Output

The SCM50ASL is rated for a maximum continuous sound pressure level of 112dB at one metre.

This provides the dynamic capability required for orchestral music, rock, electronic recordings and other material with wide contrasts between quiet and loud passages.

High output is combined with ATC’s emphasis on low distortion, clarity and tonal accuracy.

Matching Stands Included

Matching 250mm stands are supplied and raise the approximate total speaker height to 967mm.

Eight M8 floor spikes and locking nuts are included across the pair. Suitable spike shoes or floor protectors should be used on wood, laminate, tile and other vulnerable surfaces.

The stands should be levelled carefully before the cabinets are positioned and connected.

Plan Access and Installation

Each speaker weighs 48.9kg and measures 717mm high, 304mm wide and 480mm deep, including its rear amplifier.

Confirm access through doorways, stairways and tight corners before installation. Additional space is also required behind each cabinet for the XLR cable, mains lead and ventilation.

Room Positioning

Begin with the speakers positioned symmetrically and given reasonable clearance from the rear and side walls.

Adjust speaker spacing, wall distance and toe-in gradually while listening to familiar recordings.

The preferred position should provide a stable central image, even bass and a natural tonal balance without allowing nearby room boundaries to dominate the lowest frequencies.
