ATC SCM20PSL Classic Passive Standmount Speakers

The ATC SCM20PSL is a high-performance two-way passive standmount loudspeaker supplied as a stereo pair.

It has remained part of ATC’s range since 1990, evolving through several driver and crossover revisions while retaining the compact sealed-cabinet format that made the original design so highly regarded.

The SCM20PSL sits above the ATC SCM19 as ATC’s highest-performing passive two-way standmount model.

ATC 150mm Super Linear Mid/Bass Driver

The SCM20PSL uses ATC’s SB75-150SL 150mm Super Linear mid/bass driver.

Its substantial short-coil and long-gap motor assembly is designed to maintain a controlled magnetic field throughout the driver’s operating range.

ATC’s Super Linear Magnet technology reduces magnetic distortion within the motor system, helping voices and instruments retain clarity, texture and low-level detail.

The unusually large 75mm voice coil also improves thermal capacity and control, allowing the compact speaker to reproduce demanding musical peaks with confidence.

ATC S-Spec Dual-Suspension Tweeter

High frequencies are reproduced by ATC’s SH25-76S 25mm soft-dome tweeter.

Its dual-suspension construction supports the dome at two points, helping control unwanted movement without relying on ferrofluid within the magnetic gap.

The high-energy motor and controlled dispersion are designed to preserve fine detail while integrating smoothly with the large mid/bass driver.

ATC matches the response of the speakers to within approximately 0.5dB, supporting stable stereo imaging and consistent tonal balance across the pair.

Hand-Built Passive Crossover

A second-order passive crossover divides the signal at 2.2kHz.

ATC builds the crossover using high-voltage polypropylene film capacitors and oversized air-cored inductors wound in-house.

Air-cored inductors avoid the magnetic saturation and hysteresis associated with some cored designs, while the film capacitors provide low losses and long-term stability.

Sealed Cabinet Design

The SCM20PSL uses a sealed enclosure rather than a reflex port.

This avoids port noise and produces a controlled bass response that prioritises timing, pitch definition and gradual low-frequency roll-off.

The cabinet is heavily constructed, internally braced and fitted with damping panels at critical points to reduce vibration and cabinet colouration.

A sealed cabinet can also be more adaptable near room boundaries than some rear-ported alternatives, although nearby walls and corners will still affect bass output.

55Hz to 25kHz Frequency Response

ATC specifies low and high-frequency cut-off points of 55Hz and 25kHz at minus 6dB under free-standing measurement conditions.

The SCM20PSL is designed to reproduce bass cleanly rather than using an elevated upper-bass response to create an impression of greater cabinet size.

A properly integrated active subwoofer may be added where deeper extension is required, particularly in larger rooms or systems used for music and film.

85dB Sensitivity and Amplifier Matching

The SCM20PSL has a specified sensitivity of 85dB at one watt and one metre.

Its nominal impedance is 8 ohms, with a stated minimum of 5.5 ohms. ATC recommends amplification between 75W and 300W.

The final choice should consider amplifier quality, current delivery, room size, listening distance and expected playback level rather than wattage alone.

Speaker Stands

Each SCM20PSL weighs 16.9kg, so it requires rigid stands rated to support more than that weight safely.

The stand should also provide a sufficiently large top plate and position the tweeter close to seated ear height.

Lightweight stands with a 15kg load limit are not suitable. Stand height, top-plate dimensions, stability and floor interface should all be checked before installation.

Room Positioning

Begin with the speakers positioned symmetrically and given moderate clearance from the rear and side walls.

Adjust their spacing, wall distance and toe-in gradually while listening to familiar recordings.

The preferred position should produce a stable central image, an even tonal balance and controlled bass without allowing nearby room boundaries to dominate the presentation.

Bi-Wire Connections

Two pairs of heavy-duty binding posts allow single-wired or bi-wired connection using suitable 4mm plugs or securely terminated bare cable.

For conventional single-wire operation, the terminal links must remain securely fitted.

External bi-amplification should only be attempted when the complete wiring arrangement is understood and the terminal links have been removed.
