The Solidsteel HF-B is the compact amplifier platform in the company's flagship HF Hyperspike family. It provides the same basic stainless steel structure, substantial 30mm MDF platform and 80kg load capacity as the deeper HF-A, but trims the depth from 600mm to 480mm.

That seemingly simple difference can matter enormously in a real room. Plenty of integrated and power amplifiers simply do not need a 600mm-deep platform, and the HF-B lets you give them a dedicated low-level support without the stand projecting unnecessarily far into the room.

There are good practical reasons for keeping amplification away from the main equipment rack too. A separate stand can free up a shelf, reduce the amount of weight carried by a tall rack, make heavy speaker and mains cables easier to route and give hot-running amplification unrestricted space above it.

As with the HF-A, the important dimension to check is width. At approximately 404mm, the platform is narrower than the chassis of many conventional full-width amplifiers. That does not necessarily rule them out, but the amplifier's feet must sit securely on the platform. Get that right and the HF-B is a neat, beautifully engineered solution for substantial amplification without taking up any more room than necessary.

Check the Amplifier Feet, Not Just the Chassis

The HF-B platform is approximately 404mm wide x 480mm deep. Many hi-fi amplifiers have chassis wider than 404mm, but their support feet may sit comfortably inside that footprint. Do not assume compatibility from the external chassis dimensions alone, and equally do not assume an overhanging amplifier is safe without checking where its feet actually sit.

Why Put an Amplifier on Its Own Stand?

Amplification often presents different installation challenges from the rest of a hi-fi system.

A large integrated or power amplifier can be:

  • Much heavier than the source components
  • Hotter running

The reduced depth is the key distinction between HF-B and HF-A and makes the HF-B particularly useful where:

Check Connected Depth

The amplifier's quoted depth may not tell the whole story.

Allow enough space behind the HF-B for cables to leave the amplifier naturally. Tight bends can place unnecessary stress on sockets and connectors, particularly with heavy speaker and mains cables.

404mm Platform Width

The HF-B shares the same approximately 404mm platform width as the HF-A.

Because conventional full-width hi-fi components are often around 430mm to 450mm wide, some amplifier chassis will extend beyond the edge.

That is not automatically a problem if the equipment manufacturer allows it and the amplifier's actual feet sit safely inside the platform, but stability must always take priority over appearance.

Do Not Balance a Large Amplifier on the Edge

Excellent for Hot-Running Amplifiers

One of the biggest practical advantages of a low amplifier stand is unrestricted vertical space.

Many high-output amplifiers use large heatsinks and rely on natural airflow to dissipate heat.

Removing the shelf immediately above the amplifier can be particularly useful with:

Which One Should You Choose?
