There is plenty of proper engineering underneath the straightforward appearance too. The aluminium support poles are internally damped with StratoCell material, the substantial 30mm MDF shelves can support up to 60kg each, and adjustable stainless-steel spikes allow the complete rack to be levelled accurately on the floor.
The standard shelf arrangement provides one approximately 245mm interval and two approximately 225mm intervals. That gives a little extra room for a larger component while keeping the complete four-shelf rack to a manageable 905mm high.
We also like the modularity. Different upright heights are available if the standard arrangement does not suit your equipment, and additional shelves can be incorporated later. Many conventional integrated amplifiers will fit within the standard S3-4, but chassis height is only one part of the calculation.

Do Not Squeeze a Hot Amplifier Into the Rack
If an amplifier is physically close to the 225mm or 245mm shelf clearance, there may not be enough room for safe cooling. Consider the open top platform, a custom S3 spacing or a dedicated Solidsteel amplifier stand instead.
The Open Top Shelf
The upper platform has no shelf above it, making it particularly useful for components that need unrestricted vertical access.

The complete assembled S3-4 measures approximately 584mm wide because of the structure surrounding the platforms.
Approximately 500mm Usable Width
The aluminium supports occupy part of the physical shelf width, leaving approximately 500mm of usable space for equipment positioned between them.
That is sufficient for the majority of conventional 430mm to 450mm-wide hi-fi components.
Three Different Width Figures?
The complete rack is approximately 584mm wide, the MDF shelf itself approximately 580mm and the usable space between the supports around 500mm. For unusually wide equipment, the 500mm figure is the one that matters most.
430mm Shelf Depth
The S3 shelves are approximately 430mm deep.
That accommodates a large proportion of normal hi-fi equipment, although particularly deep amplification and AV electronics should be checked carefully.
Allow for Connections Behind the Equipment
Published component dimensions normally describe the chassis, not the complete installed depth.
