The Solidsteel S3-2 is a great example of sensible specialist hi-fi furniture without heading straight into high-end rack territory. It gives a simple two-component system two substantial individual platforms, plenty of room for a large amplifier and some genuinely thoughtful engineering to help keep everything stable.
The construction is more sophisticated than the relatively simple appearance suggests. The aluminium support poles are internally filled with StratoCell damping material, while substantial 30mm MDF shelves can support up to 60kg each. Adjustable stainless-steel spikes allow the rack to be properly levelled, and protective floor discs are included.
We particularly like the proportions. At around 584mm wide and only 475mm high, the S3-2 gives a turntable or source component an open top platform while leaving a generous 325mm of space below for amplification. For a turntable and amp, streamer and amp or another deliberately simple two-box system, there is little wasted furniture.
The modular construction is another big advantage. If your system grows later, Solidsteel offers different upright heights and additional shelves, so the S3-2 need not become redundant simply because another component joins the system.
Walnut Is a Laminate Finish
The S3 Series uses 30mm MDF platforms finished in premium polymer laminate. The Walnut option provides a wood-effect finish, but it should not be confused with the genuine real-wood veneers used on Solidsteel's considerably more expensive HF Series Elite racks.

Allow for Ventilation as Well as Chassis Height

Approximately 580 x 430mm Shelves
Solidsteel's current specification gives each physical S3 shelf as approximately 580mm wide by 430mm deep and 30mm thick.
The complete assembled S3-2 is approximately 584mm wide, accounting for the supporting structure around the equipment platforms.
Audio T's established model-specific dimensions give around 500mm of usable width within the support structure.
Shelf Width and Overall Width Are Not the Same
The current Solidsteel specification quotes approximately 580mm for the MDF platform itself, while the complete rack measures around 584mm across. When checking equipment fit, the more important figure for particularly wide components is the clear space between the supports, approximately 500mm.
Check Rear Cable Clearance
The shelves are approximately 430mm deep, so particularly deep equipment deserves checking carefully.
Remember that a component's published chassis depth often excludes the space required by:

- Heavy mains cables
- RCA connectors
- XLR connectors
- Speaker terminals
- Banana plugs and spades
Measure the Installed Component
A 410mm-deep amplifier may require considerably more than 410mm once cables are connected. Make sure plugs and cables have enough room to leave the rear panel naturally without being bent sharply against a wall.
30mm MDF Equipment Platforms
The S3 Series uses substantial 30mm MDF shelves rather than lightweight furniture board.
Solidsteel currently describes them as ennobled MDF finished with a premium polymer laminate, giving the platforms a durable outer surface while retaining a dense engineered core.

The aluminium poles are not simply hollow tubes.
Solidsteel fills them internally with StratoCell, a sound-absorbing damping material intended to reduce unwanted resonance within the support columns.

A long hollow metal tube can itself store and resonate with mechanical energy.
