Triangle AIO C Compact Wi-Fi Music Streamer

Audio T Verdict

The Triangle AIO C is a very simple way of adding modern music streaming to an amplifier or active speaker system that you already like.

At just 80mm square and 20mm high, it takes up virtually no space, yet provides Wi-Fi and Ethernet network playback, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, internet radio, access to major streaming services and playback of music stored on phones, computers and network drives.

Triangle supports network audio up to 24-bit/192kHz, so the AIO C is not limited to compressed streaming or basic internet radio. APE, FLAC, WAV, Apple Lossless, AAC and MP3 files are all supported.

The clever bit is that Triangle provides both analogue and digital outputs. Connect the 3.5mm analogue output to an ordinary amplifier and the AIO C operates as a complete compact streamer. Alternatively, use its optical digital output with an external DAC or amplifier that already has a suitable digital input.

It also becomes part of Triangle's wider AIO multiroom ecosystem. An AIO C connected to the main Hi-Fi can be grouped with compatible Triangle AIO products elsewhere in the house, allowing the same music to play across several rooms.

There is no Bluetooth, touchscreen or large front-panel display. The AIO C is deliberately much simpler than that. Setup and everyday control are handled through the Triangle AIO app, AirPlay, Spotify Connect or another supported network source.

If you already own a perfectly good amplifier but want to bring streaming into the system without replacing it, the AIO C is a neat and compact solution.

Add Streaming Without Replacing Your Amplifier

The AIO C is particularly useful when the amplifier at the heart of your system still performs perfectly well but predates modern music streaming.

Rather than replacing the entire amplifier, connect the AIO C to an available input and it adds access to online music services, network storage, internet radio and compatible mobile devices.

Two Ways to Connect to Your Hi-Fi

The AIO C provides both analogue and digital audio outputs.

Analogue Output

  • 3.5mm stereo mini-jack
  • Connect directly to an amplifier's analogue input
  • 3.5mm-to-RCA cable supplied
  • Uses the AIO C's internal digital-to-analogue conversion
  • Ideal for amplifiers without digital inputs

Optical Digital Output

  • Optical Toslink connection
  • 24-bit/44kHz output
  • Connect to an amplifier or external DAC
  • Allows the downstream DAC to handle conversion
  • Useful with digitally equipped Hi-Fi systems

The 3.5mm Connection Is an Output

The 3.5mm connection sends analogue audio from the AIO C to an amplifier, active speakers or another suitable line-level input.

It is not an auxiliary input for connecting another source to the AIO C.

Using the Analogue Output

For a traditional integrated amplifier, connection can be as straightforward as:

  • Connect the AIO C to your home network
  • Connect its 3.5mm output to an RCA line input on your amplifier
  • Select that amplifier input
  • Choose music from the Triangle AIO app or another supported service

Triangle supplies a 3.5mm-to-RCA cable for this purpose.

Using an External DAC

If your amplifier or system already contains a DAC that you prefer, use the AIO C's optical digital output.

In this configuration, the AIO C acts as the network source while the downstream DAC handles digital-to-analogue conversion.

24-Bit/192kHz Network Playback

Triangle specifies network music playback up to:

24-bit / 192kHz.

This applies to compatible material streamed across the network rather than meaning that every streaming service or track is automatically supplied at that resolution.

High-Resolution Music Depends on the Source

Actual playback resolution depends on factors including:

  • The streaming service
  • Your subscription level
  • The particular album or track
  • The original file resolution
  • Network conditions
  • The connection used between the AIO C and the rest of the system

Network and Optical Resolution

The AIO C supports compatible network material up to 24-bit/192kHz.

Its optical digital output is specified at 24-bit/44kHz, so the maximum network playback figure does not also describe the optical connection.

Wi-Fi or Ethernet

The AIO C can connect to your home network in two ways:

  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi
  • 10/100Mbps Ethernet

2.4GHz Wi-Fi

Triangle specifies IEEE 802.11 b/g/n wireless networking on the 2.4GHz band.

2.4GHz generally provides useful range around a home, although actual performance depends on the router, interference, building construction and the position of the AIO C.

Wired Ethernet

A 10/100Mbps RJ45 Ethernet socket provides an alternative to wireless networking.

A wired connection can be particularly useful where:

  • The Hi-Fi is a long way from the router
  • Wi-Fi reception is weak
  • The home has substantial walls
  • Network reliability is the priority
  • Several AIO products are being grouped together

Wi-Fi Network Streaming

The AIO C is designed around network streaming rather than Bluetooth.

Compatible playback can be controlled through the Triangle AIO app, AirPlay, Spotify Connect and supported streaming services.

Triangle AIO App

The Triangle AIO application is available for compatible iOS and Android devices.

It provides access to functions including:

  • Music playback
  • Streaming services
  • Internet radio
  • Music stored on a mobile device
  • Network music libraries
  • Connected AIO products
  • Multiroom grouping
  • Individual device volume
  • Favourites
  • Device naming
  • Alarm settings
  • Automatic power-down settings
  • Wi-Fi signal information

Spotify Connect

Spotify Connect allows the AIO C to be selected directly as a playback device from within the Spotify app.

Once playback is handed to the AIO C, the network player retrieves the music rather than relying on the phone to continuously transmit ordinary audio.

This allows the phone to continue being used normally without interrupting playback.

AirPlay

Apple users can send compatible audio to the AIO C using AirPlay.

This provides a convenient route for compatible applications and audio sources from Apple devices.

Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, Qobuz and Amazon Music

Triangle lists support for major streaming services including:

  • Spotify
  • Deezer
  • Tidal
  • Qobuz
  • Amazon Music

Individual services may require an appropriate account or subscription.

Internet Radio With TuneIn

TuneIn integration provides access to internet radio through the AIO platform.

This can include:

  • UK radio stations
  • International broadcasters
  • Genre-based stations
  • Specialist internet radio

Play Music From a NAS

The AIO C supports UPnP and DLNA network playback.

This allows compatible music stored on devices such as a NAS drive or network computer to be accessed across the home network.

Supported File Formats

Triangle specifies support for:

  • APE
  • FLAC
  • WAV
  • Apple Lossless / ALAC
  • AAC
  • AAC-LC
  • HE-AAC
  • HE-AAC v2
  • MP3
  • CBR and VBR encoded material

Triangle AIO Multiroom

The AIO C forms part of Triangle's Linkplay-based AIO multiroom system.

Compatible products can be controlled individually or grouped to play the same music in several rooms.

Compatible AIO products include:

  • AIO C
  • AIO 3
  • AIO TWIN
  • AIO PRO A50

Up to Five AIO Devices Over Wi-Fi

Triangle specifies multiroom grouping of up to five compatible devices using Wi-Fi, subject to the quality and stability of the home network.

Up to Ten Devices Over Ethernet

Using wired RJ45 network connections, Triangle specifies grouping of up to ten compatible AIO devices.

This can make Ethernet particularly useful for a larger multiroom installation.

Different Music in Different Rooms

Compatible AIO products do not have to operate as a single group.

Different devices can be controlled independently, allowing different music to play in different areas of the home.

Party Mode

Triangle's AIO platform allows several compatible products to be grouped for synchronised playback throughout the home.

This is useful when the same music is wanted in several rooms at once.

Left and Right Device Assignment

The AIO application can also assign compatible AIO products to left and right channels where the chosen product configuration supports stereo pairing.

The AIO C itself remains a stereo network source designed to feed an existing audio system.

Hotspot Function

When connected to the home network by Ethernet, the AIO C can also provide a Wi-Fi access point configured through the Triangle AIO app.

This can be useful within certain network installations.

Alarm Function

An alarm can be configured through the Triangle AIO app.

The AIO C needs to remain powered for the alarm function to operate.

Automatic Power-Down

The AIO app includes an automatic power-down setting that can stop playback while keeping the AIO C connected to the network.

Very Compact

The AIO C measures just:

  • Width: 80mm
  • Height: 20mm
  • Depth: 80mm

It can therefore sit discreetly beside or behind an existing Hi-Fi system without requiring another full-width equipment shelf.

160g Weight

The streamer weighs approximately:

160g.

Because the enclosure is so light, make sure connected cables are positioned so they do not pull the streamer from its intended position.

External Wi-Fi Antenna

A Wi-Fi antenna is supplied with the AIO C.

Connect the antenna when using wireless networking and allow it sufficient space around surrounding equipment.

USB Power Supply

The AIO C is powered from a 5V/1A supply.

Triangle supplies:

  • USB power adaptor
  • USB-to-Micro-USB power cable

The Micro-USB connection provides power to the streamer. Audio is supplied through the network rather than through USB.

What's Included?

Triangle supplies:

  • AIO C network player
  • Wi-Fi antenna
  • USB power adaptor
  • USB-to-Micro-USB cable
  • 3.5mm-to-3.5mm stereo cable
  • 3.5mm-to-RCA stereo cable

Where Should I Put It?

Place the AIO C on a stable surface and, where practical, within reliable range of the wireless router when using Wi-Fi.

Avoid:

  • Damp environments
  • Direct sunlight
  • Excessive heat
  • Positions where connected cables place strain on the lightweight enclosure

AIO C or a Full-Size Streamer?

Triangle AIO C

  • Extremely compact
  • Simple network streaming
  • Analogue and optical outputs
  • 24-bit/192kHz network playback
  • Triangle AIO multiroom
  • Easy upgrade for an existing system
  • App-based control

Full-Size Network Streamer

  • May provide a larger display
  • May offer a wider range of digital outputs
  • May include USB audio or storage connections
  • May support additional streaming protocols
  • May use more elaborate DAC circuitry
  • Usually requires more shelf space
  • Typically represents a larger investment

Add Streaming to a Vintage Amplifier

One of the most useful applications for the AIO C is adding network streaming to an older amplifier.

If the amplifier has a normal line-level input such as:

  • AUX
  • CD
  • Tuner
  • Tape

the supplied 3.5mm-to-RCA cable can connect the AIO C directly.

Choosing the Correct Amplifier Input

Connect the AIO C to a normal line-level input such as AUX, CD, Tuner or Tape.

A turntable phono input uses additional gain and equalisation specifically for a phono cartridge and is not suitable for the line-level output of the AIO C.

Use With Active Speakers

The analogue output can also feed powered speakers that provide a suitable line-level analogue input.

This can create a very compact streaming system without requiring a separate integrated amplifier.

Use With an External DAC

The optical digital output allows the AIO C to operate as a compact network source with a suitable external DAC.

This can be useful where the amplifier or system already includes digital-to-analogue conversion that you wish to use.
