McIntosh MA7200 2-Channel Integrated Amplifier

Audio T Verdict

The MA7200 is classic McIntosh in the best possible sense. Two large blue Watt meters dominate the black-glass fascia, while behind them is a 200W-per-channel solid-state amplifier with Autoformers, serious current delivery and enough connectivity to become the centre of an extremely comprehensive Hi-Fi system.

There are dedicated Moving Magnet and Moving Coil phono stages, extensive analogue connectivity and McIntosh's current DA2 Digital Audio Module with USB, optical, coaxial, MCT and HDMI ARC. Add Power Guard, Sentry Monitor, High Drive headphone amplification and Home Theater PassThru and there is very little the MA7200 cannot accommodate.

Perhaps its biggest strength is that McIntosh still treats the amplifier itself as the priority. Whether your source is vinyl, streaming, CD or television, the full 200 watts are available into 2, 4 or 8-ohm loudspeakers through the company's Autoformer output technology.

McIntosh MA7200 Integrated Amplifier

The MA7200 is a full-size, two-channel solid-state integrated amplifier built around McIntosh's Autoformer-coupled output stage.

It delivers 200 watts per channel into 2, 4 or 8-ohm loudspeakers, meaning the amplifier's full rated power remains available across all three nominal impedances.

The current MA7200 specification also includes the McIntosh DA2 Digital Audio Module as standard, bringing the total input count to 15 and adding HDMI ARC alongside high-resolution USB, optical, coaxial and MCT digital connections.

200 Watts Into 2, 4 or 8 Ohms

McIntosh Autoformers sit between the power-amplifier output stage and the loudspeakers, providing dedicated connections for 2, 4 and 8-ohm loads.

Full Rated Power

200W per channel is available into 2, 4 or 8-ohm loudspeakers, with both channels operating from 20Hz to 20kHz.

Amplifier Performance

McIntosh specifies 0.005% maximum THD, 2dB dynamic headroom and a wide-band damping factor greater than 40.

Advanced high-current output transistors are mounted directly to McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks, while the substantial power supply is designed to support the amplifier under demanding musical conditions.

Use the Correct Speaker Terminals

The MA7200 has dedicated 2, 4 and 8-ohm loudspeaker outputs. Match the loudspeaker's nominal impedance to the appropriate connection for correct Autoformer operation.

Power Guard and Sentry Monitor

Power Guard continuously monitors the amplifier's output signal. If the amplifier approaches clipping, the system dynamically intervenes to help prevent heavily distorted waveforms from reaching the loudspeakers.

McIntosh specifies less than 2% THD with up to 16dB of amplifier overdrive at 1kHz when Power Guard is operating.

Sentry Monitor provides additional protection against unsafe operating currents without relying on conventional output-stage fuses. Thermal protection also removes power if excessive internal temperature is detected.

Eight Analogue Inputs with MM and MC Phono

The MA7200 provides eight analogue stereo inputs:

  • 1 x balanced XLR line input
  • 5 x unbalanced RCA line inputs
  • 1 x Moving Magnet phono input
  • 1 x Moving Coil phono input

Line-level input sensitivity is 500mV balanced and 250mV unbalanced, with a 20k-ohm input impedance.

Individual input levels can also be adjusted by +/-6dB in 0.5dB increments, helping maintain a consistent listening level when switching between sources with different output voltages.

Dedicated Moving Magnet and Moving Coil Phono Stages

Both major cartridge types are catered for without requiring a separate phono preamplifier.

Moving Magnet

  • Sensitivity: 2.5mV
  • Load resistance: 47k ohms
  • Capacitance: 50pF
  • Signal-to-noise ratio: 82dB
  • Maximum input: 80mV

Moving Coil

  • Sensitivity: 0.25mV
  • Selectable loading: 50, 100, 200, 400 or 1,000 ohms
  • Capacitance: 100pF
  • Signal-to-noise ratio: 80dB
  • Maximum input: 8mV

The adjustable Moving Coil resistance is particularly useful when matching different cartridges, while a dedicated grounding terminal is provided for the turntable earth connection.

DA2 Digital Audio Module

The current MA7200 is fitted with McIntosh's DA2 Digital Audio Module, providing seven digital inputs and a Quad Balanced eight-channel, 32-bit DAC.

  • 2 x coaxial digital inputs
  • 2 x optical digital inputs
  • 1 x USB Type-B input
  • 1 x proprietary MCT input
  • 1 x HDMI ARC input

Digital format support includes:

  • USB PCM: up to 32-bit / 384kHz
  • USB DSD: DSD64, DSD128, DSD256 and DSD512
  • USB DXD: 352.8kHz and 384kHz
  • Coaxial and optical: up to 24-bit / 192kHz
  • MCT: compatible PCM and SACD DSD playback
  • HDMI ARC: PCM, Dolby Digital and DTS audio

The MA7200 is also Roon Tested. It does not contain a network streamer, so network playback still requires a suitable external streaming source or computer.

HDMI ARC for Television Audio

The DA2's HDMI ARC connection allows a compatible television to send audio directly to the MA7200, making it possible to use a high-quality two-channel system for television and film sound without introducing a conventional AV receiver.

The HDMI connection is audio only and does not pass video. Compatible HDMI CEC functionality can also allow television commands to interact with the amplifier.

High Drive Headphone Amplifier with HXD

A front-panel 6.35mm headphone connection uses McIntosh High Drive technology and is specified for headphones from 100 to 600 ohms.

Headphone Crossfeed Director, or HXD, can be activated to introduce controlled acoustic crossfeed between the left and right headphone channels, creating a presentation closer to conventional loudspeaker listening.

Bass, Treble and Source Adjustment

Separate bass and treble controls offer adjustment from -12dB to +12dB and can be completely bypassed when not required.

The settings are available through the MA7200's Trim functions along with:

  • Balance
  • Input level matching
  • MM and MC phono adjustment
  • Mono / Stereo operation
  • Meter illumination
  • Display brightness
  • Headphone HXD
  • HDMI lip-sync adjustment

Separate Preamplifier and Power Amplifier Sections

The preamplifier and power-amplifier sections are connected through removable McIntosh jumpers on the rear panel.

This means the MA7200 can operate with an external power amplifier, or its own 200W power-amplifier section can be driven from a suitable external preamplifier.

  • 2 x variable unbalanced preamplifier outputs
  • Rated preamplifier output: 1.4V
  • Maximum preamplifier output: 8V
  • Output impedance: 220 ohms
  • Power-amplifier input sensitivity: 1.4V

Home Theater PassThru and System Control

Home Theater PassThru allows the MA7200 to form part of a combined stereo and multichannel system, with a compatible AV processor controlling the volume of the main left and right channels when the assigned input is selected.

Extensive McIntosh system integration includes:

  • 1 x Main Power Control output
  • 2 x assignable Power Control trigger outputs
  • 4 x McIntosh Data Ports
  • RS232 control
  • External IR sensor input
  • Custom input naming
  • Remote control

Classic McIntosh Construction

The MA7200 has the unmistakable appearance associated with McIntosh's full-size amplification: a black-glass fascia, illuminated logo, aluminium end caps and twin blue Watt meters.

Behind the front panel are McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks and a dual-layer chassis designed to separate different circuit areas.

  • Width: 44.5cm
  • Height: 20.2cm including feet
  • Depth: 47.6cm including front controls and speaker terminals
  • Weight: 34.1kg

Plan for the Weight and Ventilation

At 34.1kg, the MA7200 requires substantial supporting furniture and adequate ventilation. Allow sufficient clearance around the amplifier and additional rear space for speaker cables, analogue connections, digital cables and the mains lead.

UK Power Specification

The UK-market MA7200 is factory configured for 230V AC, 50/60Hz at 2.35A.

McIntosh states that AC voltage conversion cannot be performed in the field, so the voltage shown on the rear panel should always be checked before connecting the amplifier to the mains.
