Roksan Attessa Integrated Amplifier

Roksan Attessa Integrated Amplifier

Audio T Verdict

The Roksan Attessa Integrated Amplifier brings together serious stereo amplification, an accomplished digital-to-analogue converter, a moving-magnet phono stage and broad everyday connectivity within one unusually slim and approachable component.

Its minimalist appearance should not be mistaken for lightweight engineering. Behind the clean aluminium fascia is a substantial Class A/B amplifier, a 400VA mains transformer and a carefully arranged analogue and digital architecture housed within a braced steel chassis.

Power output is rated at 80W per channel into 8 ohms and 130W per channel into 4 ohms, with both channels driven. That gives the Attessa enough authority for a broad selection of modern standmount and floorstanding speakers, while providing useful headroom for larger-scale recordings and more demanding musical passages.

The presentation is confident and full-bodied, but not blunt or heavy-handed. The Attessa has the drive required to keep bass controlled, while allowing voices and instruments to remain clear, organised and easy to follow.

Roksan’s Euphoria Class A/B architecture separates the voltage and current demands placed on the power amplifier, helping it deliver both finesse and the ability to control lower-impedance loudspeaker loads.

The built-in DAC makes the amplifier particularly useful in a mixed-source system. Two coaxial and two optical inputs support televisions, CD transports, network streamers, games consoles and other compatible digital sources, with PCM accepted at up to 24-bit/192kHz through coaxial connections.

A dedicated optical input identified for television use makes it easy to improve films, programmes and gaming without building a multichannel home-cinema system. There is no HDMI ARC connection, so the television must provide an optical PCM output and volume remains under the control of the Attessa.

Bluetooth offers a simple way to play music from a phone, tablet or computer. SBC, AAC and aptX are supported, although the amplifier does not include BluOS, AirPlay, Spotify Connect or independent network streaming.

That distinction is important. The Integrated Amplifier is intended for customers who already have a preferred streamer, mainly use physical sources or are happy to use Bluetooth for occasional wireless listening. Customers wanting streaming built directly into the amplifier should consider the Attessa Streaming Amplifier.

Vinyl has been properly accommodated rather than added as an afterthought. The moving-magnet phono input provides three gain settings for cartridges with different output levels, making it easier to achieve a sensible volume match with the amplifier’s line and digital sources.

Two additional analogue inputs are included. Their sensitivity can also be adjusted, while the second input provides automatic Music Sense and can be configured for AV Bypass when the Attessa is being used to power the front left and right speakers within a home-cinema system.

The pre-output can feed a compatible power amplifier, active speakers or an active subwoofer. A front headphone socket provides up to 7.5Vrms and includes adjustable sensitivity for earphones, conventional headphones and higher-impedance models.

The Attessa CD Transport is the most natural matching source. MaestroUnite allows the transport and amplifier to be grouped as one coordinated system, sharing standby status and playback control while retaining a standard coaxial digital connection.

MaestroUnite is also used to configure input sensitivity, phono gain, headphone level, balance, standby behaviour and system settings. Wi-Fi is included for setup and over-the-air updates, but it is not an audio-streaming connection on this model.

The central Dynamic Control Dial gives the Attessa much of its character. Volume and source selection are handled through one tactile control, with haptic feedback and clear OLED indicators confirming each change.

The Roksan Attessa Integrated Amplifier is an excellent foundation for a modern stereo system. It has enough connectivity to accommodate vinyl, CD, television sound, Bluetooth and a separate streamer, but avoids burdening customers with a streaming platform they may not need.

Roksan Attessa Integrated Amplifier

The Roksan Attessa Integrated Amplifier combines a stereo pre-amplifier, Class A/B power amplifier, high-performance DAC, moving-magnet phono stage and headphone amplifier within one full-width component.

It can form the centre of a system including:

  • Passive standmount or floorstanding speakers
  • A turntable with a moving-magnet cartridge
  • The matching Roksan Attessa CD Transport
  • A separate network music streamer
  • A television with optical PCM output
  • A games console or media player
  • Analogue line-level sources
  • Bluetooth phones, tablets and computers
  • Wired headphones
  • A compatible active subwoofer

Euphoria Class A/B Amplification

The Attessa uses Roksan’s Euphoria Class A/B amplifier architecture.

A power amplifier must increase both the voltage and current of the incoming music signal. These requirements interact, but place different demands on the circuit.

Roksan’s Euphoria design has been developed to provide:

  • Useful current delivery for lower-impedance speakers
  • Controlled bass performance
  • Low distortion
  • Good channel separation
  • Stable operation with suitable loudspeakers
  • Musical detail without an unnecessarily clinical presentation

The amplifier remains a conventional analogue Class A/B design rather than a digital or Class D power amplifier.

80W per Channel into 8 Ohms

Roksan specifies 80W per channel into 8 ohms with both channels driven.

This is sufficient for many modern loudspeakers in small and medium-sized rooms, provided their sensitivity and impedance are appropriate.

The amplifier’s available output allows it to reproduce musical peaks without immediately reaching its limits, helping drums, piano, orchestral crescendos and dynamic recordings retain their impact.

130W per Channel into 4 Ohms

Output rises to 130W per channel into 4 ohms, again with both channels driven.

The increase into the lower impedance indicates useful current capability and allows the Attessa to work with a broader range of speakers than the slim cabinet might suggest.

Speaker matching should still consider:

  • Nominal and minimum impedance
  • Sensitivity
  • Room size
  • Listening distance
  • Preferred playback level
  • Speaker power handling
  • Cabinet size and bass extension

Amplifier Power and Speaker Safety

A powerful amplifier can damage speakers when used irresponsibly, just as an underpowered amplifier can cause damage when driven heavily into clipping.

If the sound becomes harsh, compressed, strained or audibly distorted, reduce the volume immediately.

An Audio T demonstration can help establish whether the Attessa is an appropriate match for your chosen loudspeakers and room.

400VA Mains Transformer

A substantial 400VA mains transformer supplies the amplifier circuitry.

The transformer and power-supply components contribute significantly to the Attessa’s 10.37kg weight and give the amplifier the electrical reserves required to support its rated output.

Roksan’s internal layout has been designed to keep sensitive analogue and digital circuits appropriately separated while maintaining short, controlled signal paths.

Wide Electronic Frequency Response

The power amplifier is specified with a frequency response extending from approximately 5Hz to 50kHz at the -3dB points.

This does not mean that the connected loudspeakers will reproduce the full range. The final audible response will depend on the speakers and room.

The extended amplifier bandwidth allows the Attessa to handle the audible range without imposing an unnecessarily early electronic limitation.

High-Performance Digital-to-Analogue Converter

The built-in DAC accepts two-channel PCM audio at up to 24-bit/192kHz through the coaxial digital inputs.

Roksan developed the DAC architecture in-house, and its design provided the foundation for the later Rapture DAC technology used within the Caspian Series 4G.

The DAC allows digital sources to connect directly without requiring a separate converter.

Two Coaxial Digital Inputs

Two RCA coaxial S/PDIF inputs accept PCM at resolutions up to 24-bit/192kHz.

Suitable sources include:

  • The Roksan Attessa CD Transport
  • Other CD transports and players
  • Network music streamers
  • Digital radios
  • Media players
  • Compatible computers through a suitable digital interface

A proper 75-ohm digital coaxial cable is recommended.

Two Optical Digital Inputs

Two Toslink optical inputs accept stereo PCM at up to 24-bit/96kHz.

One optical connection is identified for television use, although either compatible input can be used with an appropriate digital source.

Optical audio provides electrical isolation between the source and amplifier, which can be helpful when connecting televisions, computers and other equipment sharing different mains supplies.

Using the Attessa with a Television

Connect the television’s optical digital output to the Attessa’s television input using a Toslink cable.

Configure the television’s digital-audio format as:

  • PCM
  • Stereo
  • Two-channel audio

Do not select Dolby Digital, DTS, bitstream or another multichannel surround format, as the Attessa is a stereo PCM amplifier rather than a home-cinema decoder.

No HDMI ARC or eARC

The Attessa Integrated Amplifier does not include HDMI.

Television audio must use optical or analogue connectivity, and the Attessa volume is controlled through its own dial or supplied remote rather than the television handset.

Bluetooth Audio

Bluetooth provides a convenient wireless connection for compatible phones, tablets and computers.

The Attessa supports:

  • SBC
  • AAC
  • aptX

Roksan specifies a typical range of up to approximately 15 metres with a clear line of sight.

Walls, furniture, other wireless equipment and the construction of the source device can reduce the practical range.

Custom Internal Bluetooth Aerial

Roksan uses an internal Bluetooth aerial with a tuned reflector rather than mounting an external aerial on the rear panel.

This preserves the Attessa’s clean appearance while helping isolate the wireless circuit from nearby audio connections.

Bluetooth Is Not Network Streaming

The Attessa Integrated Amplifier does not contain BluOS or an independent network-music player.

It does not directly provide:

  • Spotify Connect
  • TIDAL Connect
  • Qobuz Connect
  • Apple AirPlay 2
  • Internet radio
  • NAS music-library playback
  • USB music-file playback
  • Multiroom audio

These functions can be added through a separate music streamer connected to one of the digital or analogue inputs.

Why Does the Integrated Amplifier Have Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is used by MaestroUnite for product setup and over-the-air firmware updates.

It is not used for normal music playback.

The amplifier only requires internet access during the relevant update procedure and does not function as a conventional network streamer.

Moving-Magnet Phono Stage

A dedicated stereo RCA phono input allows a compatible moving-magnet turntable to connect directly.

The phono stage uses RIAA equalisation and presents a standard 47k-ohm load with approximately 56pF capacitance.

A grounding terminal is provided for turntables fitted with a separate earth wire.

Three Phono Gain Settings

The phono-stage gain can be adjusted through the amplifier’s menu or MaestroUnite.

The available settings are intended for cartridges producing approximately:

  • 12mV: use the lower-gain setting
  • 6mV: use the middle setting
  • 3mV: use the higher-gain setting

The middle setting is the normal starting point for many moving-magnet cartridges, including compatible Roksan designs.

If the turntable sounds unusually quiet, try the next higher setting. If it sounds overloaded or distorted, select a lower gain.

Avoid Using Two Phono Stages

A turntable with a built-in phono stage already produces a line-level signal.

Connect it to analogue input A1 or A2 rather than the dedicated phono input.

Passing the signal through two phono stages normally produces excessive gain, severe distortion and an incorrect tonal balance.

Moving-Coil Cartridge Compatibility

The built-in phono stage is intended for moving-magnet cartridges.

A low-output moving-coil cartridge normally requires a suitable external moving-coil phono stage or step-up device.

The external phono stage should connect to analogue input A1 or A2.

Analogue Input A1

A1 is a conventional stereo RCA line-level input without automatic signal sensing.

It can be used with:

  • A network streamer
  • A CD player with analogue output
  • A cassette deck
  • An external DAC
  • A phono pre-amplifier
  • A turntable with a built-in phono stage
  • A compatible media player

Analogue Input A2

A2 is another stereo RCA input and adds Music Sense and AV Bypass capability.

Music Sense allows the amplifier to wake automatically when it detects an appropriate incoming signal, provided Standby Plus is enabled and the 12V trigger is not active.

This can be useful with a streamer, television converter or another source that is regularly left connected.

Adjustable Analogue Input Sensitivity

A1 and A2 can each be configured for sources with different output levels.

Roksan provides three settings:

  • Low sensitivity: intended for sources producing around 3Vrms
  • Medium sensitivity: intended for sources producing around 1.5Vrms
  • High sensitivity: intended for sources producing around 0.75Vrms

The terminology refers to the amplifier’s input sensitivity. A high-output source normally requires the lower-sensitivity setting.

Correct adjustment helps balance the volume of different sources and reduces the risk of overloading the analogue input.

AV Bypass for Home-Cinema Integration

A2 can be configured for AV Bypass when the Attessa is being used to power the front left and right speakers within a multichannel system.

In this arrangement:

  • The AV receiver’s front pre-outputs connect to A2
  • The Attessa powers the front left and right speakers
  • The AV receiver controls the overall home-cinema volume
  • The Attessa’s normal volume stage is bypassed for A2

AV Bypass Must Be Configured Carefully

AV Bypass sets the Attessa to a fixed high-gain operating condition.

Switch off all equipment before connecting the AV receiver and set the receiver volume to its minimum level during initial configuration.

Never connect an ordinary fixed-output source to A2 while AV Bypass is active. The resulting playback level could damage the speakers, amplifier or hearing.

An Audio T store can help configure and test the system safely.

Stereo Pre-Output and Subwoofer Connection

A pair of RCA sockets is provided for pre-amplifier or subwoofer use.

The output can be used with compatible equipment including:

  • An external stereo power amplifier
  • Active loudspeakers
  • An active subwoofer with stereo line inputs
  • A power amplifier serving another listening area

A connected subwoofer should provide suitable level, crossover and phase controls so that it can be integrated correctly with the main speakers.

Front Headphone Output

The front 3.5mm headphone socket provides up to 7.5Vrms, giving the Attessa the ability to drive a broad range of earphones and headphones.

Connecting headphones automatically mutes the speaker outputs and reduces the volume to a safer starting level.

When the headphones are removed, the amplifier restores the speaker output at a controlled level.

Adjustable Headphone Sensitivity

Headphone sensitivity can be set to low, medium or high.

As a general starting point:

  • Use the lower setting for sensitive in-ear monitors and earbuds
  • Use the medium setting for many conventional headphones
  • Consider the higher setting for less sensitive or higher-impedance models

Always begin at a low volume and increase it gradually.

Dynamic Control Dial

The central Dynamic Control Dial handles volume, mute and source selection.

Turn it normally to adjust the listening level. Pressing the dial briefly mutes or restores the sound.

Press, hold and rotate the dial to move through the available sources.

Haptic feedback provides a physical confirmation as each input is selected.

OLED Input and Volume Displays

OLED displays positioned around the central control show:

  • The selected source
  • Volume position
  • Mute status
  • Menu settings
  • Update information
  • Protection and error messages

An automatic display saver switches off the OLED after a period without commands to help preserve its useful life.

Supplied Attessa Remote Control

An infrared remote and two AAA batteries are supplied.

The handset provides control over:

  • Standby
  • Volume
  • Mute
  • Source selection
  • Settings menus
  • Compatible Attessa CD Transport playback

The remote requires a reasonably clear line of sight to the amplifier unless a compatible wired infrared system is installed.

MaestroUnite Setup and Configuration

MaestroUnite is the setup and management app for compatible Roksan and Monitor Audio Group products.

It can be used to:

  • Create and name an Attessa system
  • Add the Integrated Amplifier and CD Transport
  • Configure the Wi-Fi connection used for updates
  • Check and install firmware
  • Adjust analogue-input sensitivity
  • Adjust phono gain
  • Adjust headphone sensitivity
  • Change left and right balance
  • Configure standby behaviour
  • Enable the 12V trigger
  • Enable wired infrared control
  • Customise input icons

The amplifier remains fully usable through its front controls and remote after setup.

Balance Adjustment

The left and right balance can be adjusted by up to approximately 3dB in either direction.

This can help where:

  • The listening position is not central
  • One speaker is closer to a wall
  • The room is acoustically asymmetrical
  • Furniture affects one channel more than the other

Balance adjustment should be used to make the sound appear central from the main listening position rather than to compensate for a faulty speaker or connection.

Attessa CD Transport Integration

The Roksan Attessa CD Transport is the natural physical-disc source.

Connect the transport through one of the Attessa’s coaxial digital inputs using the supplied digital cable.

Once both products have been added to the same MaestroUnite system, they can share:

  • Standby status
  • Power commands
  • CD playback control
  • System information
  • Firmware management

The transport supplies the original 16-bit/44.1kHz CD signal, while the amplifier performs digital-to-analogue conversion.

Attessa Integrated Amplifier and CD Bundle

The Roksan Attessa Integrated Amplifier and CD Transport Bundle provides a coordinated two-box system for customers retaining a physical CD collection.

Simply add suitable passive speakers and speaker cables.

Adding a Separate Network Streamer

A separate streamer can be connected through coaxial, optical or analogue audio.

This approach may suit customers who:

  • Already own a preferred streaming product
  • Want to choose their own streaming platform
  • May upgrade the streamer independently
  • Use services not supported by BluOS
  • Want to keep streaming and amplification separate

12V Trigger Connections

The rear 3.5mm trigger connections allow compatible components to coordinate their power state.

One connection accepts an appropriate trigger signal, while the second can pass that signal to another component such as a compatible subwoofer.

The trigger feature must be enabled through the amplifier menu or MaestroUnite.

When the 12V trigger is active, A2 Music Sense is disabled and the trigger takes priority over automatic standby.

Wired Infrared Input

A rear 3.5mm wired IR input allows the amplifier to receive control commands when installed inside furniture, in another room or as part of a compatible automation system.

The connection does not provide power for an infrared receiver, so any attached IR device must be suitable for the Attessa’s electrical specification.

Enabling wired IR disables the amplifier’s built-in infrared receiver.

Automatic Standby

Automatic standby is enabled by default.

The amplifier enters standby after approximately 20 minutes without a suitable signal.

The feature can be disabled for installations where manual or trigger-based control is preferred.

Standby Plus

Standby Plus keeps selected low-energy communication functions active.

It is required for:

  • MaestroUnite system wake-up
  • Communication with a grouped Attessa CD Transport
  • A2 Music Sense
  • Sharing status while in standby

Standby Plus increases consumption compared with the standard low-power standby mode.

Protection Systems

The Attessa monitors operating conditions and can mute itself when it detects a problem.

Protection conditions include:

  • Excessive internal temperature
  • A short circuit at the speaker terminals
  • Over-current
  • Abnormal mains voltage
  • DC at the output

If the amplifier reports an error, switch it off and check the loudspeaker cables before attempting to restart it.

Speaker Cable Guidance

The Attessa accepts correctly terminated 4mm banana plugs or suitable bare wire.

Roksan recommends simple, good-quality speaker cables rather than highly capacitive or unusually complex woven designs.

For bare-wire connections, use a suitable conductor size and ensure that no loose strands can touch the neighbouring terminal or chassis.

Switch Off Before Changing Speaker Cables

Disconnect the amplifier from the mains before fitting or removing speaker cables.

A loose strand or accidental short circuit can activate the amplifier’s protection system and may cause damage.

Correct Speaker Polarity

Connect the red positive amplifier terminal to the red positive terminal on each speaker.

Connect the black negative amplifier terminal to the corresponding black speaker terminal.

Reversing one speaker will weaken bass performance and make the stereo image sound vague or unstable.

Monitor Audio Speaker Matching

Roksan and Monitor Audio are part of the same wider group, and the Attessa has frequently been demonstrated with Monitor Audio’s Silver Series.

Potential partners include:

The ideal model will depend on the size of the room, required bass extension and normal listening level.

Using Speakers from Other Manufacturers

The Attessa is not restricted to Monitor Audio loudspeakers.

Audio T can demonstrate suitable alternatives from several manufacturers, helping compare:

  • Standmount and floorstanding designs
  • Speaker sensitivity
  • Nominal and minimum impedance
  • Room size
  • Listening distance
  • Bass extension
  • Tonal balance
  • Placement requirements

Choose the Integrated Amplifier When

  • You already own a network streamer
  • You prefer to choose your own streaming platform
  • Vinyl, CD and wired sources are the priority
  • Bluetooth covers occasional wireless playback
  • You want to upgrade the streamer separately
  • A lower purchase price is preferable

Choose the Streaming Amplifier When

  • You want BluOS built into the amplifier

Compare the Roksan Attessa Streaming Amplifier.

Black and Silver Finishes

The Attessa Integrated Amplifier is available in black or silver.

Both use the same formed steel chassis, machined anodised-aluminium front panel, amplifier circuitry and connectivity.

Choosing the same finish as the Attessa CD Transport creates the most visually coordinated system.

Placement and Ventilation

Place the amplifier on a firm, level and well-supported surface.

Avoid:

  • Carpet and other soft surfaces
  • Enclosed furniture without ventilation
  • Direct sunlight
  • Radiators and other heat sources
  • Damp or humid locations
  • Blocking the ventilation openings
  • Placing heavy equipment directly on top

The amplifier weighs approximately 10.37kg, so the supporting furniture must be strong enough for the component and any equipment stacked beneath it.

Stacking with the Attessa CD Transport

The Attessa Integrated Amplifier and CD Transport share the same 432mm width.

If the products must be stacked, Roksan recommends placing the amplifier on top and the CD Transport underneath.

This helps preserve amplifier ventilation and prevents unnecessary heat from reaching the disc mechanism.
