JBL L82 Classic MkII Standmount Speakers

Audio T Verdict

The JBL L82 Classic MkII combine bold retro styling with the scale, energy and rhythmic drive that make JBL speakers so immediately enjoyable.

The substantial 200mm pure-pulp woofer gives bass instruments and drums genuine presence, while the titanium-dome tweeter delivers crisp detail and an open, lively presentation.

The MkII crossover and upgraded drive units improve integration and clarity, while dual terminal pairs now provide single-wire, bi-wire or compatible bi-amplifier operation.

A front-mounted high-frequency control lets you fine-tune the treble balance to suit your room and partnering equipment.

They need proper stands and more room than the compact L52 Classic, but reward careful setup with powerful, expressive sound and an unmistakable sense of fun.

JBL L82 Classic MkII Standmount Speakers

The JBL L82 Classic MkII are substantial two-way standmount speakers inspired by JBL’s celebrated studio-monitor and Classic Series designs.

Each cabinet combines a 200mm white pure-pulp cone woofer, a 25mm titanium-dome tweeter and a front-firing bass-reflex port.

They are supplied as a mirror-imaged stereo pair in Natural Walnut veneer with a choice of Black, Orange or Blue Quadrex foam grilles.

Amplification and Stands Are Required

The L82 Classic MkII are passive speakers and require a suitable stereo amplifier, streaming amplifier or AV receiver.

JBL recommends amplification between 25W and 150W RMS per channel. The dedicated JBL JS-80 stands are recommended but sold separately.

Updated MkII Acoustic Design

The MkII version introduces upgraded woofer and tweeter assemblies together with a revised crossover network.

These changes are designed to improve clarity, driver integration and stereo imaging while preserving the strong dynamics and full-bodied tonal character associated with the original L82 Classic.

The revised terminal panel also adds separate high-frequency and low-frequency connections for bi-wiring or compatible bi-amplification.

200mm Pure-Pulp Woofer

The large 8-inch woofer uses a lightweight white pure-pulp cone mounted within a rigid cast frame.

Its generous radiating area allows the L82 Classic MkII to move considerably more air than a conventional compact standmount speaker, producing convincing bass weight and effortless dynamic scale.

JBL specifies a frequency response extending down to 44Hz at the -6dB point, giving the speakers substantial low-frequency authority without requiring a separate subwoofer in every system.

25mm Titanium-Dome Tweeter

A 25mm titanium-dome tweeter handles frequencies above the 1.7kHz crossover point.

The tweeter is partnered with an acoustic lens and waveguide, helping control dispersion and maintain consistent high-frequency performance across the listening area.

The result is an open and detailed presentation with strong stereo focus and the fast, expressive character expected from JBL.

Adjustable High-Frequency Level

A front-mounted rotary control adjusts the tweeter output relative to the woofer.

The marked 0dB position provides the recommended starting point. Small adjustments can then compensate for room acoustics, speaker placement or personal preference.

Start at 0dB

Set both speakers to the same 0dB position while completing the initial positioning and system setup.

If the room makes the sound overly bright, turn both controls slightly anticlockwise. If the treble feels subdued, make a small clockwise adjustment.

Front-Firing Bass-Reflex Port

The front-mounted reflex port reinforces the lower frequencies and avoids placing the port directly against the wall behind the speaker.

This can provide greater flexibility than a similarly sized rear-ported design, although the L82 Classic MkII still produce substantial bass and benefit from careful positioning.

Moving the speakers closer to walls or corners will generally increase bass output, while bringing them further into the room can improve control and soundstage depth.

Single-Wire, Bi-Wire or Bi-Amp Connection

Two pairs of gold-plated binding posts provide separate connections for the high-frequency and low-frequency crossover sections.

Single-Wire Connection

  • Uses one speaker cable per cabinet
  • Terminal straps must remain securely fitted
  • Suitable for most integrated amplifiers
  • Provides the simplest installation

Bi-Wire or Bi-Amp Connection

  • Terminal straps must be removed first
  • Bi-wiring uses two cable runs from one amplifier
  • Bi-amping uses compatible separate amplifier channels
  • Correct polarity must be maintained throughout

Check the Terminal Straps

Leave the metal terminal straps fitted for conventional single-wire operation.

Only remove them when using a correctly configured bi-wire or bi-amplifier connection. Incorrect wiring could damage the amplifier or speakers.

JS-80 Stands and Positioning

JBL recommends the dedicated JS-80 stands, which position the speakers approximately 404mm above the floor and angle the cabinets towards the listening area.

The stands are sold separately and provide a suitably stable platform for cabinets weighing 12.8kg each.

Begin with the speakers approximately 1.8m to 2.4m apart and around 500mm from the side walls where the room allows. Angle them towards the listening position for a stronger central image, or use less toe-in for a wider presentation.

JBL L52 Classic or L82 Classic MkII?

Choose the L52 Classic When

  • The listening room is relatively compact
  • A smaller cabinet is easier to accommodate
  • Wall mounting may be required
  • Moderate listening levels are typical
  • A 133mm woofer provides sufficient scale

Choose the L82 Classic MkII When

  • Greater bass weight and dynamic scale are required
  • The room can accommodate a larger cabinet
  • A 200mm woofer is preferred
  • Bi-wire or bi-amp connectivity is useful
  • Higher output and sensitivity are priorities

The JBL L52 Classic provide the same distinctive styling and adjustable treble balance within a much smaller cabinet.
