Roksan Attessa Streaming Amplifier

Roksan Attessa Streaming Amplifier

Audio T Verdict

The Roksan Attessa Streaming Amplifier combines a powerful analogue integrated amplifier, high-resolution network streamer, DAC, moving-magnet phono stage and headphone amplifier within one slim and unusually approachable component.

Its 80W-per-channel output into 8 ohms rises to 130W per channel into 4 ohms, giving the Attessa enough drive for a broad selection of modern standmount and floorstanding loudspeakers.

The amplifier uses Roksan’s Euphoria Class A/B architecture rather than a compact Class D module. A substantial 400VA power supply helps it retain control during demanding musical passages, while the 10.48kg construction feels reassuringly substantial.

The sound has the drive and solidity associated with Roksan, but it is not simply about power. Vocals remain expressive, instruments are easy to follow and the amplifier has enough rhythmic confidence to keep music involving without forcing detail unnaturally forward.

BluOS transforms the Attessa into a complete modern music system. It can stream high-resolution audio at up to 24-bit/192kHz, access major subscription services, play Internet Radio and podcasts, browse music stored on a computer or NAS drive and join compatible BluOS products around the home.

Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music and Deezer are among the available services. Apple AirPlay 2 allows Apple Music, BBC Sounds, podcasts and other compatible applications to play from an iPhone, iPad or Mac.

The Attessa is also Roon Ready, allowing it to operate as a certified network endpoint within a compatible Roon system. Roon requires its own server, application and subscription.

Three BluOS presets can be assigned to favourite stations, albums, playlists or other supported content. They appear alongside the conventional inputs and can be selected from the front control or remote without opening the BluOS app.

Physical sources have not been neglected. The built-in moving-magnet phono stage includes three gain settings, while two additional analogue inputs accommodate a CD player, cassette deck, external DAC or another line-level source.

Four S/PDIF inputs provide two coaxial and two optical connections. A compatible television can be connected through optical audio, while the matching Attessa CD Transport uses the dedicated coaxial CD input.

The Streaming Amplifier can decode MQA-encoded PCM arriving through its digital inputs, including suitable MQA CDs played through the Attessa CD Transport. Ordinary CDs remain conventional 16-bit/44.1kHz PCM.

There is no HDMI ARC connection, so television sound requires optical or analogue audio and volume remains under the control of the Attessa rather than the television handset.

Bluetooth provides a quick connection for guests or applications that are not supported directly. SBC, AAC and aptX are included, although BluOS, AirPlay 2 or one of the supported Connect services will normally provide the better everyday streaming experience.

A front headphone socket provides enough voltage for a broad range of earphones and headphones. The rear pre-output can feed a separate power amplifier, active loudspeakers or a suitable active subwoofer.

A2 adds Music Sense and AV Bypass. Music Sense can wake the amplifier when an incoming signal is detected, while AV Bypass allows the Attessa to power the front speakers within a compatible home-cinema system.

MaestroUnite manages product setup, firmware, input sensitivity, phono gain, headphone sensitivity, balance, standby behaviour and Attessa system grouping. BluOS remains the main application for browsing and controlling streamed music.

This distinction can initially appear confusing, but the two applications have clear roles. MaestroUnite configures the Roksan hardware, while BluOS manages music, streaming services, network libraries, presets and multiroom playback.

The Attessa CD Transport is the obvious matching disc source. Once grouped through MaestroUnite, the two components can coordinate power and playback, while the CD Transport can also be controlled through BluOS.

The Attessa Streaming Amplifier will not suit somebody who needs HDMI, balanced inputs, room correction or multichannel surround decoding. It is a traditional high-quality stereo amplifier that happens to contain an extremely capable streaming platform.

For customers who want vinyl, CD, streaming, television sound and multiroom audio from one amplifier, it remains one of the most complete and convincing products in its class.

Roksan Attessa Streaming Amplifier

The Roksan Attessa Streaming Amplifier combines Class A/B amplification with BluOS high-resolution network streaming.

Add a suitable pair of passive speakers and it can form a complete system for:

  • High-resolution music streaming
  • Spotify, TIDAL, Qobuz and other services
  • Internet Radio and podcasts
  • Apple AirPlay 2
  • Roon playback
  • Music stored on a NAS drive or computer
  • USB music-file playback
  • Bluetooth audio
  • Turntable playback
  • CD and other digital sources
  • Optical television sound
  • Wired headphone listening
  • BluOS multiroom audio

Euphoria Class A/B Amplification

The Attessa uses Roksan’s Euphoria Class A/B amplifier architecture.

A power amplifier must increase both the voltage and current of the incoming signal. Roksan’s circuit has been developed to handle these demands while maintaining stability, low distortion and control over a suitable loudspeaker load.

The design provides:

  • Strong current delivery
  • Controlled low-frequency performance
  • Clear stereo separation
  • Low background noise
  • Useful dynamic headroom
  • Compatibility with a broad range of speakers

80W per Channel into 8 Ohms

The Attessa delivers 80W per channel into 8 ohms with both channels driven.

This is sufficient for many modern standmount and floorstanding speakers in small and medium-sized rooms, provided their impedance and sensitivity are suitable.

Amplifier power is not simply about maximum volume. Additional headroom helps the system reproduce brief musical peaks without immediately reaching its limits.

130W per Channel into 4 Ohms

Output increases to 130W per channel into 4 ohms.

The increase into the lower impedance demonstrates useful current capability and allows more demanding loudspeakers to be considered.

The suitability of a speaker will also depend on:

  • Its minimum impedance
  • Its sensitivity
  • The size of the room
  • The listening distance
  • The preferred playback level
  • The speaker’s power handling

Amplifier Power Still Requires Sensible Use

A powerful amplifier can damage loudspeakers when used at excessive levels.

If the sound becomes hard, strained, compressed or audibly distorted, reduce the volume immediately.

An Audio T demonstration can help establish whether the Attessa is an appropriate match for your chosen speakers and room.

400VA Mains Transformer

A substantial 400VA mains transformer supplies the amplifier and associated circuitry.

The power supply contributes to the Attessa’s reassuring 10.48kg weight and helps provide the electrical reserves required for its rated output.

The amplifier’s internal analogue, digital and networking sections have been arranged to reduce unnecessary interference between the different circuits.

Built-In BluOS Streaming

BluOS is a high-resolution network music and multiroom platform.

It allows the Attessa to access music from:

  • Compatible subscription services
  • Internet Radio
  • Podcasts
  • Music stored on a computer
  • Music stored on a NAS drive
  • Compatible USB storage
  • Spotify Connect

  • A compatible Roon system

The free BluOS Controller application is available for compatible iOS, Android, Windows and macOS devices.

High-Resolution Streaming up to 24-Bit/192kHz

BluOS supports high-resolution audio at up to 24-bit/192kHz.

The available quality depends on:

  • The streaming service
  • The customer’s subscription
  • The recording
  • The source-file format
  • The home network
  • Regional availability

A high-resolution badge does not guarantee that every recording will sound better. Mastering quality remains extremely important.

Supported Music Services

BluOS provides access to a broad range of services, including major UK options such as:

  • Spotify
  • TIDAL
  • Qobuz
  • Amazon Music
  • Deezer
  • IDAGIO
  • Presto Music

Service availability, subscription requirements and features can change according to provider and region.

The Manage Music Services menu within BluOS shows the current services available to the user.

Spotify Connect

Spotify Connect allows the Spotify application to select the Attessa as the playback device.

The amplifier then streams directly from Spotify rather than receiving the audio continuously from the phone.

This allows the controlling device to take calls, run other applications or leave the room without interrupting playback.

TIDAL through BluOS

TIDAL can be accessed through the BluOS Controller and through supported TIDAL connection functions.

Available quality depends on the selected TIDAL subscription and current service support.

The BluOS app can browse albums, artists, playlists and favourites without requiring a separate external streamer.

Qobuz and Qobuz Connect

Qobuz can be accessed directly through BluOS.

Current BluOS software also supports Qobuz Connect, allowing the Qobuz application to select the Attessa as the playback device.

The stream is delivered directly through the network rather than being sent from the phone through Bluetooth.

Amazon Music and Deezer

Amazon Music and Deezer can be added through the BluOS Manage Music Services menu.

Account types, playback quality and regional availability depend on the service provider.

Once signed in, content can be browsed and controlled through the BluOS Controller.

Apple AirPlay 2

Apple AirPlay 2 allows compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac devices to send audio to the Attessa through the home network.

It can be used with applications including:

  • Apple Music
  • BBC Sounds
  • Podcasts
  • Internet-radio applications
  • Video applications
  • Music stored on compatible Apple devices

AirPlay 2 also allows the Attessa to be grouped with other compatible AirPlay products.

Roon Ready

The Attessa Streaming Amplifier is Roon Ready.

This means Roon can discover and stream to the amplifier through its certified RAAT network-audio connection.

A complete Roon system also requires:

  • A Roon subscription
  • A compatible Roon Server
  • The Roon application
  • A suitable wired or wireless network

Roon is separate from BluOS, although the Attessa can be selected as a network endpoint within the Roon interface.

Internet Radio and Podcasts

BluOS provides access to thousands of Internet Radio stations and podcasts from around the world.

Users can browse by:

  • Country
  • City
  • Genre
  • Popularity
  • Podcast category
  • Recently played content
  • Saved favourites

Internet Radio requires a working broadband connection and depends on the continued availability of the broadcaster and directory provider.

Music Stored on a NAS Drive or Computer

BluOS can index music stored in a compatible shared folder on a computer or NAS drive.

This is useful for customers with:

  • Ripped CD collections
  • Downloaded high-resolution music
  • A central household music library
  • Music already shared with other network players

The shared folder must be available through the home network and configured using a supported file-sharing method.

USB Music Playback

Compatible USB storage can be connected to the rear USB connection and browsed through the BluOS Controller.

The USB input is intended for music storage rather than direct computer audio.

It is not a conventional USB DAC input for a laptop or desktop computer.

Supported Audio Formats

BluOS supports commonly used formats including:

  • FLAC
  • WAV
  • AIFF
  • ALAC
  • MP3
  • AAC
  • WMA
  • WMA Lossless
  • OGG
  • MQA

DSD files can be converted to a compatible lossless format using the BluOS desktop application. The Attessa does not play native DSD directly.

MQA Playback

The Attessa Streaming Amplifier contains MQA decoding technology.

MQA-encoded streams and files can be decoded through the BluOS platform, while compatible MQA-encoded PCM can also enter through the digital inputs.

This includes suitable MQA CDs played through the matching Attessa CD Transport.

Ordinary PCM, FLAC and CD material does not require MQA processing.

Up to 64 BluOS Zones

BluOS can create a multiroom system containing compatible products from different BluOS-enabled ranges.

Depending on the network and system configuration, up to 64 zones can be managed through the BluOS Controller.

Individual zones can:

  • Play different music independently
  • Be grouped for synchronised playback
  • Use separate volume levels
  • Be named according to their room
  • Access shared music services and libraries

Three BluOS Presets

Three user-configurable BluOS presets appear within the Attessa source list.

A preset can provide quick access to compatible content such as:

  • An Internet Radio station
  • A playlist
  • An album
  • A streaming-service favourite
  • A network-library selection

The presets can be recalled using the front Dynamic Control Dial or the supplied remote without first opening the BluOS app.

BluOS Controller App

The BluOS Controller is used for everyday streaming operation.

It can control:

  • Music-service browsing
  • Internet Radio and podcasts
  • Network and USB libraries
  • Playback
  • Volume
  • Source selection
  • Presets
  • Multiroom grouping
  • Queue and playlist management
  • BluOS-related settings

MaestroUnite App

MaestroUnite performs a different role from BluOS.

It is used to:

  • Create and name an Attessa system
  • Add compatible Attessa components
  • Configure the amplifier’s wireless connections
  • Install Roksan firmware updates
  • Adjust analogue-input sensitivity
  • Adjust phono gain
  • Adjust headphone sensitivity
  • Configure balance
  • Configure automatic standby
  • Configure AV Bypass
  • Configure trigger and wired IR functions
  • Customise input icons

BluOS or MaestroUnite?

Use BluOS to find, select and play music.

Use MaestroUnite to configure the Roksan hardware, group Attessa components and install Roksan firmware.

The amplifier may occasionally receive separate update notifications from each application because the Roksan control system and BluOS streaming module use different firmware.

Two Wireless Network Modules

The Streaming Amplifier contains separate wireless modules for BluOS streaming and Roksan over-the-air updates.

Both are configured during initial MaestroUnite setup.

This separation allows BluOS to manage music streaming while MaestroUnite controls the Attessa hardware and product firmware.

USB Wi-Fi Dongle and Extension Cable

A USB Wi-Fi dongle and short extension cable are supplied.

The extension can improve reception where the amplifier is installed close to other equipment or inside suitable furniture.

Keep the dongle clear of large metal objects and power cables where possible.

Wired Ethernet

A rear RJ45 Ethernet connection provides a wired alternative to Wi-Fi.

Roksan recommends wired Ethernet where practical because it can provide the most consistent network performance.

Ethernet may be particularly useful when:

  • High-resolution music is streamed regularly
  • The Wi-Fi signal is weak
  • The amplifier is inside furniture
  • The household network is busy
  • Large network libraries are used
  • Multiroom playback involves several zones

Bluetooth Audio

Bluetooth provides a quick wireless connection for phones, tablets and computers.

The supported codecs are:

  • SBC
  • AAC
  • aptX

Roksan specifies a typical range of up to approximately 15 metres with a clear line of sight.

Bluetooth is convenient for visitors and unsupported applications, but BluOS, AirPlay 2 or a supported Connect service will normally provide a more stable network-based connection.

High-Performance Built-In DAC

The Attessa includes a high-performance DAC developed by Roksan.

Digital PCM is accepted at up to:

  • 24-bit/192kHz through coaxial S/PDIF
  • 24-bit/96kHz through optical S/PDIF
  • 24-bit/192kHz through supported BluOS sources

The DAC feeds the amplifier’s analogue pre-amplifier and Class A/B output stage.

Two Coaxial Digital Inputs

Two RCA coaxial S/PDIF inputs support PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz.

Suitable sources include:

  • The Roksan Attessa CD Transport
  • Another CD player or transport
  • A digital radio
  • A media player
  • A games console with compatible output
  • Another network source

A proper 75-ohm digital coaxial cable is recommended.

Two Optical Digital Inputs

Two Toslink optical inputs accept two-channel PCM up to 24-bit/96kHz.

One is identified for television use, while the other can accommodate another compatible source.

Optical audio can also provide electrical isolation between the connected source and amplifier.

Using the Attessa with a Television

Connect the television’s optical output to the Attessa television input.

Set the television’s digital-audio format to:

  • PCM
  • Stereo
  • Two-channel audio

Dolby Digital, DTS and other multichannel bitstream formats are not supported.

No HDMI ARC or eARC

The Attessa Streaming Amplifier does not include HDMI.

Television sound must use optical or analogue audio, and volume is controlled using the Attessa dial, BluOS app or supplied remote.

Moving-Magnet Phono Stage

The dedicated stereo RCA phono input contains RIAA equalisation for a compatible moving-magnet cartridge.

The input presents approximately:

  • 47k-ohm impedance
  • 56pF capacitance

A grounding terminal is provided for turntables fitted with a separate earth lead.

Three Phono Gain Settings

The phono gain can be adjusted for cartridges producing approximately:

  • 12mV: low-gain setting
  • 6mV: medium-gain setting
  • 3mV: high-gain setting

The medium setting is the normal starting point for many moving-magnet cartridges.

Increase the gain where the turntable sounds unusually quiet. Reduce it if the sound becomes overloaded or distorted.

Avoid Double Phono Amplification

A turntable with a built-in phono stage already produces a line-level signal.

Connect it to A1 or A2 rather than the dedicated MM input.

Using two phono stages normally results in excessive gain, distortion and an incorrect tonal balance.

Moving-Coil Cartridge Compatibility

The built-in phono stage is intended for moving-magnet cartridges.

A low-output moving-coil cartridge normally requires a suitable external phono stage or step-up device.

The external phono stage should then connect to A1 or A2.

Analogue Input A1

A1 is a stereo RCA line-level input without automatic signal sensing.

It can be used with:

  • A cassette deck
  • A CD player with analogue output
  • An external DAC
  • A turntable with built-in phono stage
  • An external phono pre-amplifier
  • A compatible media player

Analogue Input A2

A2 provides another stereo RCA input and adds Music Sense and AV Bypass.

Music Sense can wake the amplifier when it detects a suitable incoming signal, provided Standby Plus is active and the 12V trigger is not in use.

AV Bypass allows the Attessa to act as a power amplifier for the front left and right channels of a compatible home-cinema system.

Adjustable Analogue Input Sensitivity

A1 and A2 can be adjusted for sources with different output levels.

The available settings are intended for sources producing approximately:

  • 3Vrms
  • 1.5Vrms
  • 0.75Vrms

Correct input adjustment helps keep the volume reasonably consistent when changing between sources.

AV Bypass

AV Bypass allows an AV receiver to control the volume when the Attessa powers the front left and right speakers.

The receiver’s front pre-outputs connect to A2, while the remaining surround channels continue to be powered by the AV receiver or other amplifiers.

Configure AV Bypass Carefully

AV Bypass removes the Attessa’s normal volume control from the A2 signal path.

Switch all equipment off before making connections and reduce the AV receiver volume to minimum during initial setup.

Never connect an ordinary fixed-level source to A2 while AV Bypass is active.

Pre-Output and Subwoofer Connection

The stereo RCA pre-output can feed:

  • A compatible external power amplifier
  • Active loudspeakers
  • An active subwoofer with stereo line inputs
  • Another compatible audio system

A connected subwoofer should provide level, crossover and phase controls so that it can be integrated with the main speakers.

Front Headphone Output

The front 3.5mm headphone output provides up to approximately 7.5Vrms.

Connecting headphones automatically mutes the loudspeaker outputs and reduces the volume to a safer starting point.

The headphone level can be configured for sensitive earphones, conventional headphones and less sensitive or higher-impedance designs.

Attessa CD Transport Integration

The Roksan Attessa CD Transport is the matching physical-disc source.

Connect the transport to the dedicated coaxial CD input using the digital cable supplied with the transport.

Once the products have been grouped through MaestroUnite:

  • Selecting CD can wake the transport
  • Standby can be coordinated
  • The supplied remote can control CD playback
  • CD playback can be controlled through BluOS
  • Compatible MQA CD signals can be decoded by the amplifier

Dynamic Control Dial

The central Dynamic Control Dial handles volume, mute and source selection.

Turn the dial to adjust volume.

Pressing it briefly mutes or restores the sound, while pressing, holding and rotating moves through the available inputs.

Haptic feedback provides physical confirmation as each source is selected.

OLED and Volume Displays

The front OLED and LED displays show:

  • Selected input
  • Volume position
  • Mute status
  • BluOS preset selection
  • Setup information
  • Firmware messages
  • Protection warnings

An automatic display saver reduces unnecessary OLED use after a period without commands.

Supplied Attessa Remote

An infrared remote and two AAA batteries are included.

The remote controls:

  • Standby
  • Volume
  • Mute
  • Source selection
  • Settings
  • BluOS playback
  • Compatible Attessa CD Transport functions

12V Trigger Connections

Rear 3.5mm trigger connections allow compatible equipment to coordinate power.

The incoming trigger signal can also be passed to another device, such as a compatible active subwoofer.

When the trigger is active, it takes priority over automatic standby and disables A2 Music Sense.

Wired Infrared Input

A rear wired IR input supports suitable installation and automation systems.

This can be useful where the amplifier is installed inside furniture or in another room.

Enabling wired infrared control disables the built-in front infrared receiver.

Automatic Standby

Automatic standby is enabled by default.

The amplifier enters standby after approximately 20 minutes without a suitable signal.

The feature can be disabled where manual, BluOS or trigger-based operation is preferred.

Standby Plus

Standby Plus keeps selected low-energy communication functions available.

It is required for:

  • BluOS network visibility during standby
  • Wake-up through the BluOS application
  • MaestroUnite system communication
  • A2 Music Sense
  • Coordination with the Attessa CD Transport

Standby Plus uses more power than the standard low-consumption standby mode.

Protection Systems

The amplifier monitors operating conditions and can mute or shut down when it detects a problem.

Protection includes:

  • Over-temperature monitoring
  • Over-current protection
  • Speaker-cable short-circuit protection
  • DC protection
  • High-mains-voltage protection
  • Low-mains-voltage protection

If a warning appears, switch the amplifier off and inspect the speaker cables before restarting it.

Speaker Cable Guidance

The binding posts accept suitable 4mm banana plugs or correctly prepared bare wire.

Roksan recommends simple, good-quality speaker cables rather than highly capacitive or unusually complex woven designs.

Switch the amplifier off and disconnect it from the mains before fitting or removing speaker cables.

Correct Speaker Polarity

Connect the red positive amplifier terminal to the red positive terminal on each speaker.

Connect the black negative terminal to the corresponding black speaker terminal.

Reversing one speaker reduces bass and weakens the central stereo image.

Monitor Audio Speaker Matching

Roksan and Monitor Audio are part of the same wider group, and the Attessa has often been demonstrated with Monitor Audio Silver loudspeakers.

Potential partners include:

The best choice will depend on the room, listening distance, required bass extension and preferred presentation.

Using Speakers from Other Manufacturers

The Attessa is not restricted to Monitor Audio speakers.

Audio T can demonstrate compatible alternatives and help compare:

  • Standmount and floorstanding designs
  • Speaker sensitivity
  • Nominal and minimum impedance
  • Room size
  • Listening distance

Black and Silver Finishes

The Attessa Streaming Amplifier is available in black or silver.

Both versions use the same plated-steel chassis, machined anodised-aluminium front panel, amplifier, DAC and BluOS platform.

Choosing the same finish as the Attessa CD Transport creates the most coordinated system.

Placement and Ventilation

Place the amplifier on a firm, level and well-supported surface.

Avoid:

  • Carpet and soft surfaces
  • Enclosed furniture without ventilation
  • Direct sunlight
  • Radiators and other heat sources
  • Damp or humid locations
  • Blocking ventilation openings
  • Placing heavy equipment on top

The amplifier weighs approximately 10.48kg, so the supporting furniture must be suitably strong.

Stacking with the Attessa CD Transport

The amplifier and CD Transport share the same 432mm width.

If they must be stacked, position the amplifier on top and the CD Transport underneath.

This helps preserve amplifier ventilation and reduces unnecessary heat around the disc mechanism.
