Audio T Verdict
The Spendor Classic 1/2 are substantial three-way standmount speakers that combine the scale and bass authority of a floorstander with the focus and flexibility of a dedicated monitor.
A 22cm bass driver delivers impressive depth and weight, while the separate 15cm EP77 midrange driver gives voices and acoustic instruments the natural, unforced character for which Spendor is renowned.
The 22mm polyamide-dome tweeter completes a smooth and cohesive presentation that favours tonal richness, transparency and long-term listening pleasure over exaggerated brightness or artificial impact.
A refined crossover, strengthened cabinet and elastomer panel damping help the three drivers work as a unified whole, producing a wide soundstage and convincing dynamic contrast.
The Classic 1/2 require space, substantial stands and capable amplification, but reward a carefully matched system with effortless scale, exceptional vocal clarity and an immersive musical performance.
Spendor Classic 1/2 Standmount Speakers
The Spendor Classic 1/2 are large passive three-way speakers designed for dedicated stands in medium and larger listening rooms.
Each cabinet contains a 22cm bass driver, 15cm EP77 polymer midrange driver and 22mm polyamide-dome tweeter within a twin-port reflex enclosure.
They are supplied as a stereo pair in Cherry or Walnut real-wood veneer and are designed and manufactured in the UK.
Stands and Amplification Are Required
The Classic 1/2 are passive loudspeakers and require a suitable external amplifier.
Spendor recommends the dedicated Classic 1/2 stands for the correct listening height and mechanical support. The stands are not supplied with the speakers.
Purpose-Designed Three-Way System
Dividing the frequency range between three dedicated drive units allows each driver to concentrate on a more controlled part of the music.
The large bass driver handles the lowest frequencies, the separate EP77 midrange reproduces voices and instruments, and the compact tweeter takes over above 2.7kHz.
Crossover points at 415Hz and 2.7kHz are carefully chosen to create a coherent transition between the drivers rather than making the speaker sound like three separate elements.
22cm Bass Driver
The dedicated 22cm bass driver uses an advanced polyamide-fibre reinforced polymer cone with a Kevlar composite stabiliser.
Its large radiating area and twin-port cabinet loading help the Classic 1/2 achieve a typical in-room response extending down to 30Hz.
This gives bass instruments convincing scale and weight while leaving the separate midrange driver free to reproduce vocals without carrying the full low-frequency workload.
15cm EP77 Midrange Driver
Spendor's proprietary 15cm EP77 polymer driver is dedicated to the midrange, where much of the musical information and human voice are concentrated.
The material is engineered for low colouration and smooth behaviour, helping singers, strings, piano and acoustic instruments sound clear and naturally proportioned.
Using a separate midrange driver also helps preserve openness and composure when the music becomes complex or dynamic.
Refined Cabinet and Crossover
The Classic 1/2 combine an enhanced cabinet structure with elastomer panel damping to control unwanted enclosure vibration.
The twin-port reflex system extends bass performance, while the meticulously refined crossover manages the transition between all three drive units.
The result retains the warm, involving character associated with traditional Spendor monitors while incorporating modern driver, cabinet and crossover engineering.
Dedicated Stands and Room Positioning
At 621mm high and 22.6kg each, the Classic 1/2 are considerably larger and heavier than a typical bookshelf speaker.
The dedicated Spendor stands position the drivers at the intended seated listening height and provide a rigid, open support beneath the cabinet.
Begin with the speakers placed symmetrically, away from room corners and with space around the twin reflex ports. Wall distance, spacing and toe-in can then be adjusted to balance bass weight, stereo focus and soundstage depth.
Allow Enough Space Around the Speakers
The Classic 1/2 produce considerably deeper bass than most standmount speakers and should not be treated as compact bookshelf models.
A home demonstration can be particularly useful where room size, wall proximity or bass behaviour is uncertain.
Amplifier Matching and Connections
Spendor recommends amplification between 25W and 200W per channel.
The nominal impedance is 8 ohms, although the stated minimum falls to 4 ohms. A capable amplifier with dependable current delivery will help maintain bass control and dynamic freedom.
Three pairs of gold-plated binding posts provide access to the crossover sections. For conventional single-wire use, the supplied links must remain correctly fitted.
Check the Terminal Configuration
Do not remove the terminal links or connect multiple amplifier channels without first confirming the correct wiring arrangement.
Your local Audio T store can advise on single-wiring, alternative cable configurations and suitable amplification.
Classic 2/3 or Classic 1/2?
Choose the Classic 2/3 When
- A simpler two-way design is preferred
- The room is medium sized
- A smaller and lighter cabinet is important
- Greater amplifier sensitivity is useful
- 35Hz bass extension is sufficient
Choose the Classic 1/2 When
- You want a dedicated three-way design
- Greater bass depth and scale are required
- A separate EP77 midrange driver appeals
- The room can accommodate the larger cabinet
- Substantial dedicated stands can be used
The Spendor Classic 2/3 offer much of the Classic character through a more compact two-way design.
The Classic 1/2 add a dedicated midrange driver, deeper bass and greater large-scale authority.
