The Audio Note CD Zero is a compact, dedicated CD player built for listeners who still value their physical music collection and want a straightforward route into Audio Note’s distinctive approach to digital replay.
It combines a modified Philips front-loading mechanism, a non-oversampling TDA1543 digital-to-analogue converter and a 6111WA miniature valve analogue output stage within a single compact case.
Its focus is deliberately narrow: playing conventional Red Book audio CDs through a carefully designed analogue output. It is not a universal disc player, streamer or digital preamplifier, but within the right system its simplicity is a large part of its appeal.
Audio Note CD Zero Valve CD Player
The Audio Note CD Zero is the company’s entry-level integrated CD player, combining the principal functions of the separate CDT Zero/II transport and DAC 0.1x digital-to-analogue converter in one compact enclosure.
It has been designed specifically for conventional Red Book audio CD playback. Digital conversion is handled by a Philips TDA1543 DAC operating without oversampling or a digital reconstruction filter, followed by a valve-based analogue output stage.
Stereo RCA outputs allow the player to connect directly to a standard line-level input on an integrated amplifier or preamplifier. A separate digital output is also provided for use with an external DAC or compatible digital recording equipment.
Designed for Red Book Audio CDs
The CD Zero is designed primarily for commercially produced Red Book audio CDs. It is not an SACD, DVD, Blu-ray, data-disc or high-resolution file player.
Compatibility with recordable discs can vary according to the disc, recording method and condition. If playback of CD-R or CD-RW media is important, we recommend testing representative discs before purchase.

Modified Philips Front-Loading Mechanism
Disc playback is handled by a Philips front-loading CD mechanism modified by Audio Note for its intended application.
The transport uses a three-beam optical pickup with a 780nm semiconductor laser to read the information stored on a conventional audio CD.
Front-panel controls provide direct access to the essential playback functions, including opening and closing the disc tray, play, pause, stop and track selection.
Non-Oversampling Digital Conversion
The CD Zero uses a Philips TDA1543 digital-to-analogue converter in a non-oversampling circuit.
Many digital players increase the sample rate mathematically and employ digital filtering before converting the signal to analogue. Audio Note takes a different approach, avoiding oversampling and removing the conventional digital reconstruction filter from the signal path.
This deliberately simple conversion architecture is central to Audio Note’s digital design philosophy and is intended to preserve the timing and musical relationships within the original recording.
No Upsampling or High-Resolution Processing
The CD Zero does not convert CD data into a higher sample rate or claim to create additional resolution that is not present on the disc.
Its digital circuitry is focused on converting the original 16-bit, 44.1kHz signal from a Red Book audio CD with as little unnecessary processing as possible.
Filterless Digital Architecture
The TDA1543 DAC is implemented without a conventional digital filter.
Audio Note favours this arrangement because it removes an additional stage of digital processing from the signal path. The player is therefore designed around the company’s own priorities rather than conventional laboratory measurements or feature count.
This is not an adjustable mode. Non-oversampling, filterless conversion forms part of the CD Zero’s fixed internal design.
6111WA Valve Analogue Output Stage
Once the digital signal has been converted, it passes through an analogue output stage using a 6111WA miniature dual-triode valve.
The valve stage prepares the signal for connection to a conventional amplifier line input and distinguishes the CD Zero from players using an entirely solid-state output circuit.
Audio Note specifies an approximate reference output of 3.0V RMS and an output impedance below 2kO.
Connect Directly to Your Amplifier
The stereo RCA analogue outputs connect to a standard line-level input on an integrated amplifier or preamplifier.
Suitable inputs may be labelled CD, AUX, Tuner or Line. The CD Zero should not be connected to a moving-magnet or moving-coil phono input, as these are designed for the much smaller signal produced by a turntable cartridge.

Digital Output for an External DAC
A single digital output allows the transport section of the CD Zero to be used with a separate digital-to-analogue converter.
This provides a possible future upgrade route while leaving the player’s internal DAC and valve output stage available for normal analogue playback.
When an external DAC is used, the digital output bypasses the CD Zero’s internal TDA1543 conversion and valve analogue output stage. The final result will therefore be determined by the connected DAC and its analogue circuitry.
Front-Panel and Remote Operation
The front panel provides the everyday controls needed to load and play a disc, pause playback, stop and move between tracks.
The supplied remote control adds track search, direct numerical track selection, repeat, random play, time-display selection, display brightness adjustment and programmed playback.
Up to 32 tracks can be stored in a programmed sequence. The display can also be dimmed or switched off when listening.
Compact Audio Note Casework
At 300mm wide, the CD Zero is narrower than a conventional full-width hi-fi component.
Its compact enclosure makes it suitable for systems where space is limited, although it should still be placed on a stable, level and well-ventilated equipment support.
Avoid positioning the player in direct sunlight, near a source of heat or in an area exposed to excessive dust, damp or vibration.
Aluminium, Black or White Finish
The Audio T product options currently include aluminium, black and white finishes.
The finish does not alter the transport, DAC or analogue output specification. Availability may vary, so the current finish choice and expected supply time should be confirmed before ordering.
System Setup and Running In
The CD Zero should be placed on a stable equipment rack with enough room for ventilation and cable connections.
Keep analogue interconnects away from mains leads where practical and make sure that the left and right output channels remain correctly connected throughout the system.
Audio Note advises that the internal components require approximately 200 hours of use before the initial bedding-in process is complete. Performance may therefore change gradually during the first weeks of ownership.
Valve and Laser Servicing
The internal valve and laser mechanism are not user-serviceable parts. Do not remove the casework or attempt to replace internal components yourself.
If the player develops a fault or has difficulty reading multiple clean, undamaged discs, contact Audio T for advice before arranging repair or servicing.
Looking After Your CD Collection
Dirty, scratched or damaged discs can cause playback problems even when the player itself is working correctly.
Handle CDs by their edges, keep the playing surface free from fingerprints and return discs to their cases after use.
If cleaning is required, wipe gently from the centre of the disc towards its outer edge rather than cleaning in a circular motion around the disc.
