Marantz PM6007 Integrated Stereo Amplifier

Audio T Verdict

The Marantz PM6007 is a well-equipped integrated stereo amplifier for listeners who want to combine traditional hi-fi sources with modern digital equipment without paying for wireless features they may not need. It provides 45 watts per channel into 8 ohms, increasing to 60 watts into 4 ohms, and offers a useful combination of analogue, digital, turntable and subwoofer connections.

Its built-in moving-magnet phono stage allows a compatible turntable to be connected directly, while the AK4490 digital-to-analogue converter provides two optical inputs and one coaxial input for televisions, CD transports and network music players. Digital signals can be accepted at resolutions up to 24-bit/192kHz, and two selectable digital filters allow the presentation to be adjusted to suit the system or listener.

Marantz combines its current-feedback amplifier design with proprietary HDAM circuitry, a toroidal transformer and carefully selected components. Speaker A and B outputs, bi-wiring support, a powered-subwoofer output, tone controls, Source Direct and a headphone connection add practical flexibility.

The PM6007 does not include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, HEOS, USB audio or HDMI. That makes it best suited to a conventional separates system, or one in which streaming is provided by a dedicated network player. For the right system, this focused approach offers an appealing balance of sound quality, connectivity and straightforward operation.

45W Per Channel

Class A/B current-feedback amplification delivers 45 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 60 watts per channel into 4 ohms.

MM Phono Input

A built-in moving-magnet phono stage allows a compatible turntable to connect without a separate phono preamplifier.

24-bit/192kHz DAC

Two optical inputs and one coaxial input accept two-channel Linear PCM digital audio at up to 24-bit/192kHz.

Speaker A and B Outputs

Two sets of speaker terminals support A/B switching, two suitable speaker pairs or bi-wiring with compatible loudspeakers.

Subwoofer Output

A dedicated pre-out makes it possible to add a compatible active subwoofer to extend the system’s low-frequency performance.

Source Direct

Source Direct bypasses the bass, treble and balance circuitry when a more direct signal path is preferred.

A Flexible Integrated Amplifier for a Separates System

The Marantz PM6007 combines stereo preamplification, power amplification, digital-to-analogue conversion and a moving-magnet phono stage in one conventional full-width component.

Its combination of analogue and digital connections makes it suitable for systems built around a turntable, CD player, television, tuner or separate music streamer. Browse Audio T’s wider range of stereo amplifiers or explore more Marantz products.

Current-Feedback Class A/B Amplification

The PM6007 uses Marantz’s current-feedback amplifier topology. It is rated at 45 watts per channel into an 8-ohm load and 60 watts per channel into 4 ohms, with both channels driven across the 20Hz to 20kHz audio range.

Power figures alone do not establish whether an amplifier will be suitable for a particular loudspeaker. Room size, listening distance, speaker sensitivity, impedance behaviour and preferred listening level are also important. Audio T can help assess whether the PM6007 has the appropriate power and control for the loudspeakers being considered.

Marantz HDAM Circuitry and Toroidal Transformer

Marantz equips the amplifier with its proprietary HDAM-SA3 and HDAM-SA2 circuitry. These discrete amplifier modules are used in place of conventional integrated operational-amplifier packages in selected parts of the circuit.

The power supply is built around a toroidal transformer and customised components. Marantz also specifies high-grade audio components, Schottky diodes, an aluminium extrusion heat sink and a linear-drive power supply as part of the PM6007’s internal design.

Built-In AK4490 Digital-to-Analogue Converter

The PM6007 incorporates an AK4490 DAC for compatible digital sources. Its rear panel provides two optical digital inputs and one coaxial digital input, allowing several wired digital devices to share the amplifier’s converter.

Supported two-channel Linear PCM resolutions extend from 16-bit to 24-bit and from 32kHz to 192kHz. This makes the amplifier suitable for the digital output from a compatible CD player, television, network player or other stereo source.

Two digital-filter settings can be selected from the front panel. Filter 1 is the default option and uses a shorter impulse response, while Filter 2 provides a different pre-echo and post-echo characteristic. The preferred setting can depend on the source, speakers, room and personal taste.

Connecting a Television

A television can be connected through one of the optical inputs, but its digital audio output must be configured for two-channel PCM. The PM6007 does not decode Dolby Digital, DTS, AAC or other multichannel formats.

The amplifier does not have HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC, so television volume and source operation will not be integrated in the same way as they would be with an HDMI-equipped amplifier.

MM Phono Stage for a Turntable

A dedicated moving-magnet phono input allows a turntable fitted with a compatible MM cartridge to connect directly to the PM6007. The phono circuit uses a FET input stage designed to maintain a simple signal path while controlling noise and distortion.

The input is designed for moving-magnet cartridges and is not directly compatible with low-output moving-coil cartridges. An appropriate external phono stage will normally be required when using an MC cartridge.

Five Analogue Audio Inputs

The PM6007 provides five analogue RCA inputs, including its MM phono input. The remaining connections are labelled for CD, tuner, network player and recorder, although conventional line-level sources can be connected regardless of the printed source name.

A fixed-level recorder output is also provided. This can feed a suitable recording device, but it should not be confused with a variable-volume preamplifier output.

Speaker A/B Switching and Bi-Wiring

Two sets of speaker terminals allow the PM6007 to operate a Speaker A pair, a Speaker B pair or two suitably matched pairs. The terminals can also be used to bi-wire one compatible pair of loudspeakers.

For one pair of speakers, Marantz specifies a suitable impedance range of 4 to 16 ohms. When Speaker A and Speaker B are used together to power two pairs, each speaker should have a nominal impedance between 8 and 16 ohms.

Browse Audio T’s selection of hi-fi speakers, or arrange a demonstration to compare suitable bookshelf and floorstanding models with the PM6007.

Add an Active Subwoofer

A dedicated subwoofer pre-out allows a compatible active subwoofer to be added. The amplifier applies a fixed 150Hz low-pass limit to this output, while the main loudspeakers continue to receive their normal signal.

The subwoofer volume follows the Speaker A volume setting. Marantz states that the amplifier does not send a signal to the subwoofer output when Speaker A output is disabled. Final crossover, level, phase and positioning adjustments should be made using the controls available on the subwoofer.

Headphone Output, Tone Controls and Source Direct

A front-panel headphone connection supports private listening. Connecting headphones disables the speaker output, helping avoid simultaneous playback through the main loudspeakers.

Bass, treble and balance controls allow the system’s tonal balance to be adjusted. Engaging Source Direct bypasses these adjustment circuits when a shorter signal path is preferred.

Explore Audio T’s range of headphones if private listening will be an important part of the system.

Add CD Playback or Music Streaming

The matching Marantz CD6007 CD player can connect through either an analogue input or one of the PM6007’s digital inputs. Using a digital connection allows the PM6007’s internal DAC and selectable filters to process the CD player’s signal.

Streaming can be added through a separate network music player. This allows the streaming features to be upgraded independently while retaining the PM6007 as the system’s amplifier.

No Built-In Wireless Streaming or HDMI

The PM6007 does not include Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, HEOS, Spotify Connect, USB audio or HDMI. These features require a suitable external source.

If integrated HEOS streaming and HDMI ARC are priorities, compare the Marantz MODEL 60n with the PM6007 before deciding.

System Matching and Installation

The PM6007 is compact enough for many conventional hi-fi racks, but it still requires clear ventilation around its top and sides. It should be positioned on a stable surface rather than enclosed tightly or placed directly on another heat-producing component.

An Audio T demonstration can help compare loudspeakers, analogue and digital sources, and subwoofer options. It can also establish whether the PM6007’s power output and connectivity are appropriate for the room and intended listening levels.
