Audio T Verdict
The Wharfedale SW-12 is where the SW Series starts to become seriously substantial. Moving up from the SW-10 brings a larger 300mm driver, a more powerful 300W amplifier and significantly greater maximum output, making the SW-12 a particularly strong choice for medium and larger rooms where a smaller subwoofer may simply run out of headroom.
That extra capability is useful for home cinema, where the dedicated LFE channel can contain sudden and demanding low-frequency effects, but the SW-12 is equally relevant to two-channel music. Integrated properly, it can extend the foundation beneath standmount or floorstanding speakers without making every recording sound artificially bass-heavy.
The key is setup. Wharfedale provides adjustable volume, a continuously variable 30–150Hz crossover, 0° / 180° phase control, stereo line-level inputs, a dedicated LFE connection and automatic signal sensing. Spend a little time with position, crossover and level and the SW-12 can add genuine low-frequency scale while remaining part of the system rather than announcing itself as a separate box in the corner.

A Step Up From the SW-10

Why Choose the Larger Driver?
Producing deep bass requires moving air.
A 300mm cone has considerably more radiating area than the 250mm driver in the SW-10, meaning the SW-12 can move a greater volume of air for a given amount of cone movement.
That additional capability becomes particularly useful when:
- The room is larger
- The listening position is further from the subwoofer
- You regularly listen at higher levels
- Home cinema is a major priority
- Your main speakers already have substantial bass output
- You want greater headroom during demanding low-frequency effects
300mm Long-Throw Bass Driver
The SW-12 uses a single 300mm or 12-inch long-throw driver.
The large cone provides the physical surface area needed to generate meaningful acoustic output at very low frequencies, while the long-throw motor system allows substantial cone travel when demanding passages require it.
What Does Long Throw Mean?
A long-throw driver is designed to move through a relatively large excursion while remaining controlled.
Low bass requires much greater diaphragm movement than midrange or treble, so useful excursion is particularly important in a subwoofer.
Non-Pressed Paper Cone
Wharfedale uses a non-pressed paper cone across the current SW-10, SW-12 and SW-15 designs.
The material is selected for useful self-damping, transient behaviour and structural rigidity.
Why Paper?
Paper-based loudspeaker diaphragms remain popular because their characteristics can be tailored through fibre composition, thickness and treatment.
For a bass driver, Wharfedale is looking for enough rigidity to move significant quantities of air while avoiding excessive ringing that would blur individual bass notes.
Self-Damping
A driver should ideally stop moving when the electrical signal tells it to stop.
If the cone itself continues resonating strongly afterwards, bass can become less distinct and different notes can start blending into one another.
The material's damping behaviour therefore contributes to transient control as well as sheer output.
Copper-Lined Centre Vent
Wharfedale lines the driver's centre vent with copper.
The manufacturer uses this to reduce magnetic distortion and improve heat dissipation from the motor assembly.
Why Heat Matters
Moving a large bass driver requires electrical power, and some of that energy inevitably becomes heat inside the voice coil and motor structure.
Controlling temperature helps the driver behave more consistently when the subwoofer is working hard for extended periods.
Built-In 300W Amplifier
The SW-12 has its own 300W internal power amplifier.
Your stereo amplifier or AV receiver therefore supplies only the appropriate low-level signal rather than directly powering the 300mm bass driver.
Why Use a Dedicated Subwoofer Amplifier?
Low-frequency reproduction can demand large amounts of electrical power.
Building the power amplifier into the subwoofer allows Wharfedale to optimise it around the specific driver and intended bass range while relieving the main amplifier of that workload.
450W Peak Output
The SW-12's amplifier can deliver 450W peak output for short-duration demands.
That additional headroom is useful when a soundtrack or recording suddenly contains a powerful transient rather than a continuous steady bass tone.
300W Versus 450W
The two figures describe different things.
- 300W: Wharfedale's main amplifier output specification
- 450W: Short-term peak output capability
The higher peak figure should not be treated as the continuous amplifier rating.
118dB Average Maximum Output
Wharfedale specifies the SW-12 for an average maximum output of 118dB measured at one metre.
This is a very significant increase over the SW-10's published 110dB figure.
Why Does 8dB Matter?
Decibels use a logarithmic scale, so an eight-decibel difference represents a substantial change in potential acoustic output rather than a small incremental step.
This is one of the clearest reasons to choose the SW-12 over the SW-10 when the room or listening levels are more demanding.
More Output Is About Headroom Too
You do not have to listen at extreme levels to benefit from a more capable subwoofer. Additional output capability gives the SW-12 greater headroom during short bass peaks, potentially allowing it to reproduce demanding material without operating so close to its limits.
35–120Hz Frequency Response
Wharfedale specifies the SW-12 from 35Hz to 120Hz within +/-3dB.
That is five hertz deeper than the equivalent SW-10 specification.
Does It Stop at 35Hz?
No.
The quoted frequency response describes the range Wharfedale specifies within its +/-3dB tolerance. Acoustic output does not suddenly disappear below 35Hz.
Room gain can also change the way the lowest frequencies behave at the listening position.
Why Deep Bass Is Difficult
The lower the frequency becomes, the more air needs to be displaced to maintain useful acoustic output.
That is why deep bass reproduction benefits from:
- A large driver
- Useful cone excursion
- A substantial enclosure
- A powerful amplifier
- Correct room placement
30–150Hz Adjustable Crossover
The continuously variable crossover lets you control the upper working range of the SW-12 when its internal filtering is being used.
The adjustment covers 30Hz to 150Hz.
Why Is Crossover Setup Important?
The subwoofer and main loudspeakers need to meet smoothly through the bass region.
A poorly chosen crossover can create either too little or too much energy around the handover frequency.
If the Crossover Is Too Low
With small main speakers, a crossover set too low can leave a gap where the speakers are already losing output but the SW-12 has not yet taken over sufficiently.
The system may sound powerful in the deepest bass yet strangely lightweight in the upper bass.
If the Crossover Is Too High
With larger floorstanders, allowing the SW-12 to reproduce too much upper bass can cause unnecessary overlap.
The result can sound thick, bloated or easy to localise as a separate subwoofer.
Wharfedale's Simple Rule
Use a higher crossover setting with smaller bookshelf speakers and a lower setting with larger floorstanding speakers. The correct final value depends on the actual speaker, room and system rather than one universal number.
Using the SW-12 With Standmount Speakers
A compact standmount often trades deep bass extension for a smaller cabinet.
The SW-12 can restore that missing foundation while allowing the main loudspeakers to continue doing what they do best through the midrange and treble.
Using the SW-12 With Floorstanding Speakers
A floorstander can already reproduce substantial bass but may still roll away before the deepest information in music and film soundtracks.
In this situation, the SW-12 should normally be crossed lower so it extends beneath the main speakers rather than simply making their existing bass louder.
Can a Subwoofer Improve a Stereo System?
Yes.
A properly integrated subwoofer can contribute to the weight of bass guitar, kick drum, double bass, piano, synthesiser and pipe organ as well as the sense of acoustic scale contained in a recording.

Dedicated LFE Input
A mono RCA LFE input allows straightforward connection to a compatible AV receiver or surround processor.
Normally, a single screened subwoofer cable runs from the AV receiver's Subwoofer Out or LFE output to the SW-12.
What Is LFE?
LFE stands for Low Frequency Effects.
The ".1" in a 5.1 or 7.1 system identifies the dedicated low-frequency effects channel contained in compatible film and multichannel soundtracks.
AV Receiver Bass Management
A modern AV receiver can also redirect low-frequency information away from speakers configured as Small and send that bass to the SW-12.
The subwoofer may therefore reproduce both dedicated LFE content and bass redirected from other channels.
AV Receiver Calibration
Many receivers include automatic calibration and room-correction systems.
These can help establish:
- Subwoofer level
- Speaker distances
- Channel delays
- Speaker crossover points
- Low-frequency room correction
Automatic calibration is a useful starting point, but it is worth checking that the results make sense before assuming every detected setting must be perfect.
Stereo RCA Inputs
The SW-12 also includes separate left and right RCA line-level inputs.
These allow connection to suitable stereo amplification with variable preamplifier outputs or dedicated stereo subwoofer outputs.
Using a Stereo Pre-Out
If the amplifier provides a spare variable preamplifier output, connect that output to the SW-12's stereo line-level inputs using a screened RCA cable.
The signal must track the main system volume so the subwoofer level rises and falls together with the main loudspeakers.
Pre-Out and Main-In Amplifiers
Wharfedale's official manual also illustrates connections for compatible amplifiers where the preamplifier and power-amplifier sections can be separated.
The published arrangement uses screened RCA Y adaptors so the preamp signal can feed both the main power amplifier and the subwoofer.
No Published High-Level Speaker Input
The SW-12's specified inputs are RCA line level and LFE. Do not connect normal amplified speaker outputs directly to its RCA sockets. If your amplifier has no suitable variable line-level connection, speak to Audio T about the correct solution.
200mV Input Sensitivity
Wharfedale specifies 200mV line-input sensitivity for maximum output.
The stereo line inputs have an impedance of 10kO, while the LFE input is specified at 5kO.
0° / 180° Phase Control
The rear-panel phase switch provides two positions: 0° and 180°.
This helps optimise the acoustic relationship between the SW-12 and main loudspeakers at the listening position.
Why Phase Matters
A subwoofer and the main speakers reproduce overlapping frequencies around the crossover region.
If those sound waves arrive significantly out of phase at the listening seat, they can partially cancel one another and make bass sound weaker or less coherent.
How to Set the Phase
Wharfedale recommends starting at 0°.
- Play familiar material containing extended bass.
- Listen from the normal seating position.
- Compare the 0° setting with 180°.
- Choose the position that gives the most natural and extended bass.
The best setting is not necessarily the one that simply sounds loudest on one particular note.
Adjustable Volume
The SW-12 has its own level control for matching its output to the rest of the system.
Wharfedale's advice is straightforward: the bass should sound even and like an extension of the main loudspeakers.
Don't Turn the Subwoofer Up Too Far
More bass is not automatically better bass.
If the level is set too high, low frequencies can swamp the rest of the recording and reduce clarity and definition.
When the Setup Is Right
You should not constantly be thinking about the physical location of the SW-12.
A useful test is to listen with it running for a while, then switch it off. If the system suddenly loses scale and low-frequency foundation but the subwoofer was not obviously drawing attention to itself before, the integration is likely heading in the right direction.
Auto Sense
The SW-12 includes an automatic signal-sensing mode.
When enabled, the internal amplifier activates when an input signal is detected.
If no signal is detected for approximately 20 minutes, it enters a reduced-power mute state.
Can Auto Sense Be Disabled?
Yes. The rear-panel control allows the feature to be switched off.
Switch Off for Extended Non-Use
Wharfedale recommends switching the subwoofer off during extended periods when the system will not be used.
Subwoofer Placement Matters
Low frequencies interact strongly with room boundaries, so moving the SW-12 can sometimes make a larger difference than changing a setting on the rear panel.
Wharfedale's Starting Position
Wharfedale recommends beginning approximately 200mm from a wall and towards the front of the listening area.
This is a starting point rather than a rigid requirement.
Closer to a Wall
Moving the SW-12 closer to a wall normally increases bass reinforcement.
This can be useful if the system sounds a little lightweight but can become excessive if the room already strongly reinforces low frequencies.
Corner Placement
A corner provides reinforcement from more than one room boundary.
Wharfedale notes that this can increase bass further but potentially at the expense of clarity.
Don't Automatically Put It in the Corner
The corner may be visually convenient and will normally give plenty of output, but it is not automatically the position with the smoothest bass. Try more than one location before settling on the final installation.
What If the Bass Is Boomy?
Try the following:
- Reduce the SW-12 level
- Move the subwoofer away from a corner
- Increase its distance from the rear wall
- Review the crossover setting
- Compare 0° and 180° phase
- Check the AV receiver's LFE level
- Re-run room calibration after changing position
What If the Bass Is Weak?
Check:
- The subwoofer is switched on
- The RCA cable is connected correctly
- The AV receiver's subwoofer output is enabled
- The SW-12 level has not been set too low
- The crossover is not set below the useful range of the main speakers
- The phase setting
- The listening position is not sitting in a room cancellation
Room Modes
Low-frequency wavelengths are long enough to interact strongly with room dimensions.
This creates areas where certain bass frequencies are reinforced and others are cancelled.
As a result, moving the subwoofer or listening position by even a relatively modest distance can sometimes change the bass significantly.
The Subwoofer Crawl
A practical way of finding promising positions is to temporarily place the subwoofer near the normal listening seat and play steady bass-rich material.
Move around the likely installation positions and listen for places where the bass sounds comparatively even rather than dominated by one note.
Then move the SW-12 to one of those locations and reassess from the listening position.
Avoid Rattling Objects
The SW-12 can generate considerably more acoustic output than the smaller SW-10.
Loose furniture, ornaments, doors and floorboards can therefore become audible long before the subwoofer itself reaches its limits.
Wharfedale specifically recommends avoiding nearby surfaces and objects likely to rattle.
Stable Floor Position
At 22.1kg, the SW-12 needs a solid and level floor position.
Wharfedale's manual recommends checking that the cabinet sits squarely on all of its floor contacts before the system is connected.
Protect Delicate Flooring
If the floor interface could mark timber, laminate, tile or another hard surface, use suitable protective cups or discs.
SW-12 for Music
The SW-12 is capable of adding real weight beneath a stereo system without turning every recording into a cinema soundtrack.
Its larger driver can be particularly useful with:

- Rock and metal

SW-12 for Home Cinema
Home cinema is arguably where the additional capability over SW-10 becomes most obvious.
A film soundtrack can contain sudden low-frequency peaks and dedicated LFE content that demand far greater output than ordinary background listening.
The 300mm driver, 300W amplifier and 118dB maximum-output specification give the SW-12 useful reserves for these demands.
5.1 Systems
In a conventional 5.1 system, connect the SW-12 to the AV receiver's subwoofer/LFE output and configure the receiver's speaker bass management according to the capabilities of the five main channels.
7.1 Systems
The same principle applies in a 7.1 configuration.
The additional surround channels do not change the SW-12's role as the system's low-frequency and LFE loudspeaker.
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X
The SW-12 itself does not decode surround formats.
A compatible AV receiver or processor performs Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and other soundtrack decoding and directs appropriate bass information to the subwoofer.
Can It Work With Wharfedale Diamond Speakers?
Yes.
It can complement compact Diamond standmounts, where the crossover would generally be set higher, or larger Diamond floorstanders where it can operate lower and provide additional extension and LFE capability.
Can It Work With Wharfedale Heritage Speakers?
Yes.
Speakers such as LINTON and SUPER LINTON already provide substantial bass, so integration should concentrate on extending the lowest frequencies rather than increasing the already strong upper-bass region.
Can It Work With Other Speaker Brands?
Yes.
A subwoofer does not need to carry the same badge as the main speakers. Appropriate output capability, connectivity, crossover adjustment, room matching and setup matter more.
SW-10 or SW-12?
Wharfedale SW-10 is the more compact option.
The SW-12 makes most sense when you need more output, greater headroom or deeper published extension.

Who Needs the SW-15?
Move to the SW-15 when room size, listening distance or required cinema output genuinely justifies the considerably larger enclosure and driver.
For many normal domestic systems, the SW-12 provides a useful balance between serious output and manageable dimensions.
Bigger Is Not Always Better
The largest subwoofer you can afford is not automatically the correct subwoofer for your room.
An SW-12 positioned and calibrated properly can outperform a larger model that is squeezed into an unsuitable corner and permanently turned down because it overwhelms the room.
Using Two SW-12 Subwoofers
Two subwoofers can be useful where the room and AV processor support them.
The main benefit is often smoother low-frequency coverage across several seats rather than simply producing twice as much bass.
Dual-Sub Calibration
Some AV receivers provide two independent subwoofer outputs and can measure each unit separately.
Where this is available, use the receiver's calibration system after both subwoofers have been broadly positioned.
Initial SW-12 Setup

Allow More Than the Bare Dimensions
