The Audio-Technica AT-OC9XML is where the OC9X range takes a fairly substantial mechanical step forward. It retains the dual-moving-coil generator architecture of the more affordable AT-OC9XEN, but replaces its aluminium cantilever and nude elliptical stylus with a much finer Microlinear diamond mounted to a 0.28mm nude Boron cantilever.
That combination is the real heart of the cartridge. Boron provides a very rigid, low-mass mechanical connection between stylus and generator, while the Microlinear profile is designed to follow extremely fine groove modulation and maintain a long contact area against the groove walls.
The generator uses independent left and right moving coils arranged in Audio-Technica's reverse-V configuration, with PCOCC copper windings, a neodymium magnet and a premium Permendur yoke. Output is 0.4mV from a 12-ohm generator, making this firmly a low-output moving-coil cartridge rather than something intended for a conventional MM input.
Audio-Technica recommends a minimum load impedance of 100 ohms. A suitable MC phono stage therefore needs enough clean gain for a 0.4mV cartridge as well as an appropriate loading option.
