The Focal Stellia occupies an unusual position. It is a closed-back headphone designed to provide much of the refinement associated with Focal's reference open-back models while giving you the isolation and reduced sound leakage that make a closed design considerably more practical.

At the heart of Stellia are 40mm pure-Beryllium M-dome drivers. These are proper passive Hi-Fi headphones, so there is no Bluetooth receiver, rechargeable battery, active noise cancellation or internal DAC sitting between your source and the drivers.

Instead, the quality of the source and headphone amplifier matters. The relatively manageable 35-ohm impedance means Stellia can work with a broad selection of headphone outputs, but a headphone at this level is revealing enough to make a high-quality DAC and amplifier particularly worthwhile.

The closed earcups have received just as much attention as the drivers.
