Dynaudio Evoke 10 Standmount Speakers

Dynaudio Evoke 10 Standmount Speakers

Audio T Verdict

The Dynaudio Evoke 10 is a compact standmount speaker with the finish, engineering and refinement expected from considerably larger models.

Its Cerotar soft-dome tweeter and 14cm Esotec+ MSP driver produce a clean, balanced presentation, while the rear-ported cabinet delivers impressive weight for its size.

At 84dB sensitivity, it benefits from an amplifier with good quality power and control. Careful stand selection and positioning are equally important, particularly if the speakers will sit close to a rear wall.

For smaller rooms or systems where space is limited but sound quality remains the priority, the Evoke 10 is a particularly accomplished choice.

Dynaudio Evoke 10 Standmount Speakers

The Dynaudio Evoke 10 is a premium passive two-way standmount loudspeaker designed for high-quality stereo systems and compact multichannel installations.

Each speaker combines:

  • One 28mm Cerotar coated fabric soft-dome tweeter
  • Dynaudio’s Hexis resonance-control inner dome
  • One 14cm long-throw Esotec+ MSP mid/bass driver
  • A high-grade second-order passive crossover
  • A rear-ported bass-reflex cabinet
  • A removable black grille
  • A single pair of loudspeaker terminals

The Evoke 10 is supplied as a matched stereo pair. Speaker stands, amplification and speaker cables are required separately.

The Most Compact Evoke Loudspeaker

The Evoke 10 is the smallest model in Dynaudio’s Evoke family, sitting below the larger Evoke 20 standmount and Evoke 30 floorstander.

Its compact dimensions make it particularly suitable for:

  • Small and medium-sized listening rooms
  • Living rooms where a discreet speaker is preferred
  • Bedrooms and home offices
  • High-quality desktop systems with suitable stands or supports
  • Rear or surround-channel duties
  • Systems where floorstanding speakers would be impractical

Although Dynaudio categorises the Evoke 10 as a bookshelf model, it will normally perform best on rigid floor stands that place the tweeter close to seated ear height.

Technology Developed Across the Dynaudio Range

The Evoke range brings together engineering ideas developed for several more ambitious Dynaudio models.

Its technology draws on work completed for:

  • The Special Forty
  • The Confidence range
  • The Contour range
  • Dynaudio professional studio monitors

This includes the Cerotar tweeter, Hexis inner dome, long-throw MSP driver construction and a crossover design influenced by Dynaudio’s flagship loudspeakers.

28mm Cerotar Soft-Dome Tweeter

High frequencies are reproduced by Dynaudio’s 28mm Cerotar coated fabric soft-dome tweeter.

The Cerotar was developed specifically for the Evoke range using ideas from the Esotar Forty anniversary tweeter and the Esotar3 used in Confidence.

Its principal elements include:

  • A precision-coated fabric diaphragm
  • Dynaudio’s Hexis inner dome
  • A lightweight aluminium voice coil
  • A strontium-carbonate Ferrite+ ceramic magnet system
  • Controlled airflow behind the playing surface
  • A carefully damped internal cavity

The tweeter is designed to combine openness and low-level detail with the smooth, controlled presentation associated with Dynaudio’s soft-dome designs.

Precision-Coated Fabric Diaphragm

The Cerotar uses a fabric dome treated with Dynaudio’s precision coating.

The combination of fabric and surface treatment provides:

  • Low moving mass
  • Controlled internal damping
  • Consistent diaphragm behaviour
  • Smooth high-frequency reproduction
  • Reduced dependence on a strong resonant peak

The dome, coating, voice coil, Hexis and magnet system are engineered as one complete high-frequency assembly.

Hexis Resonance-Control Inner Dome

The Hexis is a small dimpled inner dome positioned immediately behind the Cerotar diaphragm.

Its shape guides airflow behind the playing surface and helps prevent internal standing waves from reflecting back towards the soft dome.

Reducing this unwanted energy can improve:

  • High-frequency smoothness
  • Transient control
  • Low-level detail
  • Decay and ambience
  • Integration with the MSP driver

The same basic Hexis concept is also used in Dynaudio’s more expensive Confidence loudspeakers.

Ferrite+ Ceramic Magnet System

The Cerotar tweeter is powered by a strontium-carbonate Ferrite+ ceramic magnet system.

The motor provides the magnetic field required to move the lightweight voice coil and fabric diaphragm accurately.

It is designed to provide suitable sensitivity, control and thermal stability during quiet listening and more demanding playback.

Lightweight Aluminium Tweeter Voice Coil

The Cerotar uses an aluminium voice coil to keep its moving mass low.

A lightweight assembly can respond quickly to small changes in the musical signal while reducing stored energy within the tweeter.

The voice coil, dome and magnet system must remain accurately controlled during both fine detail and stronger high-frequency peaks.

14cm Esotec+ MSP Mid/Bass Driver

Bass and midrange frequencies are reproduced by a single 14cm long-throw Esotec+ driver.

The driver incorporates:

  • A one-piece MSP diaphragm
  • An integrated central dust-cap area
  • A 0.4mm-thick playing surface
  • Dynaudio Balance Ribs
  • A 38mm aluminium voice coil
  • A rigid glass-fibre voice-coil former
  • An aramid-fibre spider
  • An updated long-throw surround
  • A Ferrite+ ceramic magnet system

The driver must reproduce low-frequency fundamentals, voices and much of the instrumental range, making controlled movement and low colouration especially important.

One-Piece MSP Cone

The diaphragm is made from Dynaudio’s Magnesium Silicate Polymer, normally abbreviated to MSP.

The cone and central dust-cap area are moulded as one continuous component rather than assembled from separate pieces.

This construction provides:

  • Consistent behaviour across the diaphragm
  • Controlled stiffness
  • Useful internal damping
  • A direct connection to the voice-coil assembly
  • No separate dust-cap joint to introduce another resonance

0.4mm Diaphragm Thickness

Dynaudio specifies a diaphragm thickness of approximately 0.4mm.

The material and thickness are selected to balance:

  • Low moving mass
  • Mechanical stiffness
  • Internal damping
  • Controlled bass movement
  • Accurate midrange reproduction

The cone must remain sufficiently light to respond quickly while retaining enough rigidity to avoid uncontrolled flexing.

Dynaudio Balance Ribs

The small ribs visible around the centre of the MSP cone connect the diaphragm to the voice-coil former behind it.

These Balance Ribs help the cone and coil move as one controlled mechanical system.

The design transfers the motor’s force into the diaphragm while helping it maintain its intended shape as excursion increases.

38mm Aluminium Voice Coil

The Esotec+ driver uses a 38mm-diameter aluminium voice coil.

Aluminium keeps the moving mass relatively low and allows Dynaudio to use more windings than would be practical with a heavier material of the same dimensions.

Additional windings can provide:

  • Greater control over cone movement
  • Improved interaction with the magnet system
  • Useful low-frequency excursion
  • Clearer reproduction through the midrange
  • Consistent behaviour at higher playback levels

Rigid Glass-Fibre Voice-Coil Former

The voice-coil winding is supported by a rigid glass-fibre former bonded directly beneath the Balance Ribs.

The former must remain stable as the cone moves and as the voice coil changes temperature during prolonged playback.

Glass fibre provides a useful combination of rigidity, low mass and suitable electrical behaviour.

Aramid-Fibre Spider

The driver’s aramid-fibre spider forms part of its suspension system.

It helps keep the voice coil centred while controlling the cone’s forward and backward movement.

The spider must allow the required excursion without permitting the moving assembly to become unstable or misaligned.

Updated Long-Throw Surround

The Evoke 10 uses an updated surround designed to extend the driver’s available movement.

Greater controlled excursion helps the compact speaker produce useful bass and dynamic scale without requiring a larger cone or enclosure.

The surround must also preserve the driver’s midrange behaviour, as the same cone reproduces both bass and voices.

Ferrite+ Mid/Bass Magnet System

The Esotec+ driver is powered by a strontium-carbonate Ferrite+ ceramic magnet system.

The motor provides the magnetic force required to control the aluminium voice coil and MSP diaphragm throughout their operating range.

It is designed to support:

  • Controlled low-frequency movement
  • Clear midrange reproduction
  • Useful dynamic headroom
  • Stable behaviour at higher listening levels
  • Consistent integration with the Cerotar tweeter

High-Grade Second-Order Crossover

The Evoke 10 uses a high-grade passive crossover with a second-order topology.

Dynaudio states that the circuit draws on the crossover design principles developed for Confidence, using components selected for the Evoke range.

The crossover manages:

  • Frequency division between the two drivers
  • Relative output levels
  • Electrical and acoustic phase
  • Integration through the crossover region
  • Behaviour away from the central listening axis

1400Hz Crossover Frequency

The 14cm MSP driver hands over to the Cerotar tweeter at approximately 1400Hz.

This is a comparatively low crossover point for a compact two-way loudspeaker.

The low transition allows the Cerotar tweeter to reproduce a larger part of the upper midrange, while the MSP driver concentrates on bass and the lower vocal region.

The drivers, cabinet and crossover are engineered together to maintain consistent output and phase through the transition.

Rear-Ported Bass-Reflex Cabinet

The Evoke 10 uses a rear-mounted bass-reflex port.

The port works with the cabinet volume and 14cm driver to extend low-frequency output beyond what would normally be possible from a similarly sized sealed enclosure.

The rear position helps keep the front baffle clean, but it also means distance from the wall behind the speaker influences the final bass balance.

Rear-Port Positioning

Moving the Evoke 10 closer to a rear wall will normally increase perceived bass output.

Moving it further into the room can improve:

  • Bass definition
  • Low-frequency timing
  • Soundstage depth
  • Separation between instruments
  • The consistency of individual bass notes

The optimum position will depend on the room dimensions, wall construction, speaker stands and listening-seat position.

Begin with Clear Space Behind the Speakers

Start with both speakers positioned symmetrically and with clear space behind their rear ports.

Move the pair in small, equal increments while listening for the best balance of bass weight, definition and soundstage depth.

47Hz to 23kHz Frequency Response

Dynaudio specifies a frequency response from 47Hz to 23kHz within a +/-3dB tolerance.

This gives the Evoke 10 impressive low-frequency extension for a cabinet measuring only 315mm high.

Actual in-room bass will also depend on:

  • Distance from nearby walls
  • Room dimensions
  • Speaker-stand height and rigidity
  • Listening-seat position
  • Amplifier control
  • Floor construction
  • Low-frequency room modes

Using the Evoke 10 Without a Subwoofer

The Evoke 10 can provide a satisfying full-range balance in a smaller listening room without an active subwoofer.

It is capable of reproducing convincing body from:

  • Bass guitars
  • Kick drums
  • Piano
  • Cello
  • Acoustic instruments
  • Film and television soundtracks

A subwoofer may still be useful where the system requires deeper extension, greater low-frequency headroom or additional home cinema impact.

Adding the Dynaudio Sub 6

The Dynaudio Sub 6 includes a performance map for the Evoke 10.

Its DSP can tailor the subwoofer’s response to complement the known low-frequency behaviour of the main speakers.

The Sub 6 also provides:

  • Adjustable crossover control
  • Level adjustment
  • Phase adjustment
  • Delay control
  • Parametric equalisation
  • Balanced and unbalanced connections

A properly integrated subwoofer should extend the system without becoming obvious as a separate source of bass.

84dB Sensitivity

The Evoke 10 has a specified sensitivity of 84dB at 2.83V measured at one metre.

This is relatively low compared with many conventional standmount speakers, so it benefits from an amplifier capable of delivering clean power and useful dynamic headroom.

The required amplifier output will depend on:

  • Room size
  • Listening distance
  • Preferred volume
  • Musical dynamics
  • Amplifier current delivery
  • The required headroom above average listening level

6-Ohm Rated Impedance

Dynaudio specifies a rated impedance of 6 ohms.

This makes the Evoke 10 a relatively accommodating electrical load compared with many larger 4-ohm Dynaudio models.

Its low sensitivity still means amplifier quality and available output should be considered carefully, particularly in a larger room or at longer listening distances.

160W IEC Long-Term Power Handling

Dynaudio’s current specification states IEC long-term power handling of 160W.

This corrects the 180W figure previously shown in Audio T’s specification field.

The 160W rating does not mean that an amplifier of exactly that power is required. It also does not guarantee that the speaker cannot be damaged by an amplifier carrying the same published rating.

A lower-powered amplifier driven into clipping can produce harmful distortion, while a more powerful amplifier used sensibly may provide cleaner dynamic headroom.

Reduce the Volume if the Sound Becomes Distorted

Audible hardness, compression, crackling or obvious distortion can indicate that the amplifier or speakers are being overloaded.

Reduce the volume immediately rather than continuing at the same level.

Amplifier Matching

The Evoke 10 can work with a wide range of high-quality integrated and streaming amplifiers, but its 84dB sensitivity should not be overlooked.

Important considerations include:

  • Clean output into a 6-ohm loudspeaker load
  • Current delivery
  • Power-supply capacity
  • Bass control
  • Room size
  • Listening distance
  • Preferred playback level
  • Source and pre-amplifier quality

In a smaller room, a well-designed moderate-power amplifier may provide excellent results. Larger rooms or higher playback levels justify stronger amplification.

The final choice should be established through demonstration rather than comparing headline wattage figures alone.

Browse integrated amplifiers and separates at Audio T to explore suitable options.

Single-Wire Loudspeaker Connections

Each Evoke 10 uses one pair of rear loudspeaker terminals.

The speaker is designed for conventional single wiring rather than passive bi-wiring or bi-amping.

The amplifier should always be switched off before speaker cables are connected or removed.

Correct Speaker Polarity

Connect the positive amplifier terminal to the positive speaker terminal and the negative amplifier terminal to the negative speaker terminal.

If one speaker is connected with reversed polarity, the system may lose bass weight, central focus and stereo-image stability even though both speakers continue to produce sound.

The left and right speaker-cable runs should be approximately the same length.

Speaker-Cable Selection

The speaker cable should have sufficiently low resistance for its required length and should be compatible with the partnering amplifier.

Selection should consider:

  • Total cable length
  • Conductor area
  • Amplifier compatibility
  • Connector quality
  • Installation route
  • The balance of the complete system

Browse speaker cables available from Audio T to compare suitable options.

Speaker Stands Are Essential

The Evoke 10 should normally be installed on rigid floor stands rather than placed directly on the floor, a lightweight shelf or resonant furniture.

Suitable stands help provide:

  • Correct tweeter height
  • A stable mechanical foundation
  • Improved stereo imaging
  • More consistent bass
  • Reduced vibration from nearby furniture
  • Greater freedom when positioning the speakers

Speaker Stands Are Not Included

The Evoke 10 is supplied as a pair of loudspeakers. Floor stands are required separately unless an individual Audio T package or quotation specifically states otherwise.

Dynaudio Stand 10

The Dynaudio Stand 10 is designed to match Dynaudio’s compact loudspeakers, including the Evoke 10.

Its features include:

  • Rigid aluminium construction
  • A compartment for suitable filling material
  • Integrated cable management
  • Tool-free adjustable floor spikes
  • Rubber rings for hard floors
  • Non-slip top-plate pads
  • A wide and stable base

Other stands can also be considered, provided they offer the correct height, stability and top-plate support.

Correct Stand Height

The stand should place the Cerotar tweeter close to the seated listener’s ear height.

A stand that is significantly too high or too low can affect tonal balance and integration through the crossover region.

Both speaker-and-stand assemblies should be level and set to the same height.

Stand Stability and Floor Contact

The complete speaker-and-stand assembly must remain stable on the intended floor.

Carpet spikes can help reach the firm surface beneath a rug or carpet, while rubber contacts or protective discs may be preferable on wood, tile and other sensitive hard floors.

Any filling material should be clean, dry and suitable for the stand manufacturer’s design.

Speaker Positioning

Begin with the speakers positioned symmetrically and with clear space behind their rear ports.

Move both speakers in equal increments while assessing:

  • Bass weight
  • Bass definition
  • Central vocal focus
  • Soundstage width
  • Soundstage depth
  • Image stability

Small changes in wall clearance, speaker spacing or listening-seat position can produce worthwhile improvements.

Speaker Spacing

The distance between the speakers should normally be similar to, or slightly less than, the distance from each speaker to the main listening position.

If the pair is positioned too closely, the soundstage may lack width.

If it is positioned too far apart, voices and instruments in the centre can become diffuse or disconnected.

Toe-In and Listening Angle

There is no single toe-in angle that will suit every room.

Greater toe-in can:

  • Strengthen central image focus
  • Reduce some side-wall reflection
  • Create a more direct high-frequency balance

Less toe-in can:

  • Broaden the apparent soundstage
  • Create a more relaxed tonal balance
  • Provide more even coverage across a wider seating area

Both speakers should be adjusted by the same amount.

Using the Evoke 10 Close to a Wall

The Evoke 10’s compact dimensions make it easier to accommodate than a large standmount or floorstander, but its rear port still requires consideration.

Where the speakers must sit close to a wall:

  • Keep both speakers at the same distance from the wall
  • Avoid placing only one speaker close to a corner
  • Keep both port openings unobstructed
  • Listen for excessive or uneven bass
  • Experiment with small forward movements where possible

Symmetrical Room Placement

Where practical, the immediate surroundings of the left and right speakers should have similar acoustic properties.

Placing one speaker beside heavy curtains and the other beside a bare reflective wall can affect tonal balance and stereo imaging.

Windows, alcoves, open doorways, fireplaces and substantial furniture should all be considered during setup.

Traditional Curved Cabinet Design

The Evoke 10 uses a gently curved and tapered cabinet inspired by Dynaudio’s Contour and Confidence ranges.

The cabinet provides a rigid platform for the Cerotar tweeter and MSP driver while reducing the visual bulk associated with a conventional rectangular enclosure.

Its softly rounded surfaces and concealed driver fixings help the speaker appear more like a piece of furniture than a piece of studio equipment.

Concealed Driver Fixings

The driver mounting screws are hidden behind one-piece moulded trim rings.

The surface finish is incorporated during the moulding process, creating a clean and consistent appearance around both drive units.

This allows the speaker to retain a refined appearance when the grille is removed.

Current Audio T Finish Options

Audio T currently lists the Evoke 10 in:

  • Black High Gloss
  • White High Gloss
  • Walnut Wood
  • Blonde Wood

Availability can vary according to current UK production and stock.

High-Gloss Lacquer Finishes

The Black High Gloss and White High Gloss versions use Dynaudio’s improved lacquering process.

The multiple-stage finish produces a deep, smooth surface with an almost glass-like appearance.

High-gloss cabinets should be cleaned carefully with a clean, soft cloth to reduce the risk of fine surface marks.

Open Natural Wood Veneers

Walnut Wood provides a darker and warmer appearance, while Blonde Wood uses a lighter natural tone.

The open veneer allows the texture and character of the timber to remain visible and tactile.

Natural veneer will display individual differences in grain, colour and pattern. Cabinets are matched as a stereo pair and should remain together as supplied.

Black Removable Grilles

Black removable grilles are supplied with every cabinet finish.

The grilles help protect the Cerotar tweeter and MSP cone from dust and accidental contact.

Never press on the delicate tweeter diaphragm while removing or replacing a grille.

Using the Evoke 10 in a Home Cinema System

The Evoke 10 can be used as a compact front, rear or surround-channel loudspeaker within a Dynaudio Evoke home cinema system.

The shared Cerotar tweeter and related MSP technology help maintain a consistent tonal character across the range.

A complete system can combine:

  • Evoke 10 or Evoke 20 front speakers
  • Evoke 25C centre speaker
  • Evoke 10 rear or surround speakers
  • Evoke 30 or Evoke 50 floorstanding front speakers
  • A suitable active subwoofer

Matching Centre Speaker

The Dynaudio Evoke 25C is the dedicated centre-channel speaker for the Evoke range.

It uses the same Cerotar tweeter and twin 14cm MSP driver technology, helping dialogue and effects retain a consistent character across the front soundstage.

Running-In Period

The Evoke 10 can be used immediately after installation, but the driver suspension may continue to loosen and settle with normal playback.

Bass response, integration and overall ease may develop during the first several hours or weeks of use.

Special test signals or continuous high-volume playback are unnecessary. Normal varied music at sensible levels is sufficient.

Cabinet and Driver Care

Clean the cabinet with a soft, dry or very slightly damp cloth.

Do not use:

  • Abrasive cleaning products
  • Furniture polish
  • Solvents
  • Aerosol sprays
  • Excessive water

Never touch the Cerotar soft dome. Dust on the MSP cone or grille should be removed gently with a clean, soft brush.

Protecting the Cabinet Finish

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, strong uneven artificial light, high humidity or extreme temperature changes.

Natural veneer can change colour gradually with age and exposure to light.

High-gloss lacquer should be cleaned carefully to reduce the risk of fine surface marks.
