The Audio Note OTO Phono SE Signature 35th Anniversary combines an 8-watt pure Class A parallel single-ended EL84 amplifier with an internal moving-magnet valve phono stage.
The Signature specification adds copper foil signal capacitors, tantalum and niobium resistors, improved selector switches and internal cabling, and I HiB output transformers to the redesigned anniversary platform.
Loudspeaker matching remains important, but within a compatible system the OTO provides line-level source control, phono amplification and loudspeaker power amplification from one chassis.
Audio Note OTO Phono SE Signature 35th Anniversary Integrated Valve Amplifier
The Audio Note OTO Phono SE Signature is a pure Class A parallel single-ended integrated valve amplifier using four EL84 output valves.
It delivers approximately 8 watts RMS per channel into suitable 4O or 8O loudspeaker loads and includes a built-in moving-magnet valve phono stage.
The Signature version builds on the standard 35th Anniversary OTO SE with upgraded signal capacitors, resistors, selector switches, internal cabling and output transformers.

This description is for the redesigned OTO Phono SE Signature 35th Anniversary Edition.
It should not be confused with the discontinued pre-anniversary Signature amplifier, which had a published output of 10 watts, 300mV line sensitivity, 3mV phono sensitivity and an additional ECC82 valve.
It is also distinct from the standard OTO Phono SE and the higher-specification OTO Phono SE Silver Signature.
An Integrated Valve Amplifier
The OTO Phono SE Signature combines analogue source selection, volume control, moving-magnet phono amplification and loudspeaker power amplification within one chassis.
It can drive a compatible pair of passive loudspeakers without requiring a separate preamplifier or power amplifier.
Line-level sources can be connected alongside a suitable turntable and moving-magnet cartridge.

Parallel Single-Ended EL84 Output Stage
The OTO SE uses four EL84 output valves, with two operating in parallel for each channel.
The output stage operates in pure Class A and uses a single-ended circuit arrangement rather than dividing the waveform between the two halves of a push-pull output stage.
The OTO SE is therefore electrically different from the separately available OTO PP, which uses a push-pull circuit.
Approximately 8 Watts Per Channel
Audio Note specifies a maximum output of 8 watts RMS per channel into suitable 4O or 8O loudspeaker loads.
This output can provide appropriate listening levels when the amplifier is partnered with an efficient and electrically compatible loudspeaker.
It is not designed to provide the high output figures associated with large transistor amplifiers or to drive every loudspeaker regardless of sensitivity and impedance.
Loudspeaker Matching Is Important
Loudspeaker sensitivity provides a useful starting point, but it does not offer a complete compatibility assessment.
Impedance behaviour, crossover complexity, room size, listening distance and preferred playback level must also be considered.
A demonstration with the intended loudspeakers is recommended wherever possible.
Choosing the Correct Speaker Output
The OTO provides transformer-coupled loudspeaker outputs for suitable 4O and 8O loads.
Begin with the output corresponding to the loudspeaker manufacturer's nominal impedance recommendation.
Always switch the amplifier off before moving a loudspeaker cable between the 4O and 8O terminals.
Never Operate Without Loudspeakers Connected
A valve amplifier with transformer-coupled outputs should not be operated without a suitable loudspeaker load connected.
Check both loudspeaker cables before switching on and make certain that positive and negative conductors cannot touch one another.
Never connect, disconnect or change the loudspeaker wiring while the amplifier is operating.
Redesigned for the 35th Anniversary
The OTO was originally introduced in 1991 and was the first amplifier to be developed and manufactured completely by Audio Note in the UK.
For the 35th Anniversary Edition, original designer Andy Grove revised the output transformers, main power supply, power-amplifier board, phono stage, internal wiring loom and shielding.
The result is a substantially revised amplifier rather than a cosmetic anniversary edition.
Improved Selector Switches and Internal Cabling
The Signature model upgrades the selector switches and internal cabling used in the standard OTO SE.
These components form part of the source-selection and signal-routing path before the signal reaches the amplifier stages.
The upgraded arrangement is specific to the Signature and Silver Signature tiers and should not be attributed to the standard anniversary model.
Audio Note Copper Foil Signal Capacitors
The Signature uses Audio Note copper foil signal capacitors in critical circuit positions.
These replace the tinfoil signal capacitors fitted to the standard OTO SE.
Audio Note manufactures its foil capacitors in-house, allowing the component specification to be developed alongside the amplifier circuit.
Tantalum and Niobium Resistors
Selected circuit positions use Audio Note tantalum and niobium resistors.
This is another step above the standard model, which uses tantalum resistors in its critical areas but does not have the Signature model's published niobium specification.
The Silver Signature moves to a further selection of non-magnetic tantalum and silver niobium resistors.
Standard and Seiryu Electrolytic Capacitors
Audio Note Standard and Seiryu electrolytic capacitors are used in selected power-supply and circuit positions.
These are custom Audio Note components rather than generic capacitors selected solely by their basic electrical values.
Kaisei electrolytic capacitors belong to the separately specified Silver Signature version and should not be included in this Signature description.
I HiB Output Transformers
The OTO Phono SE Signature uses custom Audio Note I HiB-core output transformers.
These replace the M6 lamination output transformers used in the standard OTO SE.
The transformers are designed and wound in-house by Audio Note and provide separate connections for suitable 4O and 8O loudspeaker loads.
Redesigned BA C-Core Power Supply
The anniversary amplifier has a redesigned main power supply with optimised time constants and an in-house manufactured choke.
The Signature uses an Audio Note BA C-core mains transformer and matching choke power supply.
The power-supply redesign is shared with the standard Signature model, while the Silver Signature moves to an I HiB-core mains transformer and choke.
Revised Wiring and Internal Shielding
The wiring loom and internal shielding arrangement have been revised as part of the anniversary redesign.
Shielding is particularly relevant to the Phono version because the signal entering from a cartridge is much smaller than a conventional line-level source signal.
External phono cables should still be kept away from mains leads, power supplies and large transformers.
Built-In Moving-Magnet Valve Phono Stage
The OTO Phono SE Signature includes an onboard moving-magnet RIAA stage using one ECC83 and one 6DJ8 valve.
Audio Note specifies a 47kO phono input impedance and a phono sensitivity of 2mV.
The phono stage provides the gain and RIAA equalisation needed to connect a compatible moving-magnet cartridge.
Simplified Phono Signal Path
The anniversary phono stage has greater sensitivity than the preceding OTO Phono SE Signature.
Together with revisions to the power-amplifier board, this allows Audio Note to remove the additional line stage used in the discontinued Phono model.
Removing that stage simplifies the signal path and reduces the current amplifier's valve complement from nine valves to eight.
Using a Moving-Magnet Cartridge
A compatible moving-magnet cartridge can connect directly to the OTO's 47kO phono input.
The
Audio Note IQ III moving-magnet cartridge
provides one potential partner within an Audio Note vinyl system.
Cartridge output, recommended capacitance, tonearm wiring and interconnect capacitance should all be considered when completing the system.
Using a Moving-Coil Cartridge
The OTO Phono SE Signature does not include a direct active moving-coil input.
A typical low-output moving-coil cartridge requires a correctly matched step-up transformer before connection to the moving-magnet input.
The
Audio Note IO I moving-coil cartridge
can be partnered with a suitable Audio Note step-up transformer.
The
Audio Note AN-S5/L
is designed for very low-impedance cartridges, but the correct transformer must always be selected according to cartridge impedance.
Do Not Connect a Low-Output MC Cartridge Directly
A typical low-output moving-coil cartridge will not provide sufficient signal when connected directly to the OTO's moving-magnet input.
Confirm the complete cartridge, transformer and phono-stage combination before ordering.
Eight-Valve Complement
The OTO Phono SE Signature 35th Anniversary uses eight valves in total.
- 4 x EL84: two parallel output valves per channel
- 2 x ECC83: main amplifier circuit

The additional ECC82 fitted to the preceding Phono version is not included in the current anniversary valve complement.
Connecting Analogue Sources
CD players, DACs, streamers, tuners and other products with analogue line-level outputs can connect to the OTO's line inputs.
The published line input impedance is 100kO, with a sensitivity of 200mV for full output.

Connecting Digital Sources
The OTO does not contain a DAC, network streamer, USB audio input or Bluetooth receiver.
A digital transport requires an external DAC, while a network player must provide an analogue output or connect through a separate DAC.

Signature Compared with Standard OTO SE
Both amplifiers share the current 35th Anniversary chassis, circuit topology, power output, valve complement and main technical specifications.
The Signature upgrades the standard amplifier with improved selector switches and cabling, copper foil rather than tinfoil signal capacitors, tantalum and niobium resistors, and I HiB rather than M6 lamination output transformers.
The BA C-core mains transformer and choke power supply are used in both the standard and Signature versions.

Matching Audio Note Loudspeakers
Audio Note's efficient loudspeaker designs provide natural candidates for demonstration with the OTO.

Published minimum power is only a starting point. The complete system should be assessed at the intended listening distance and playback level.
Room Size and Listening Level
The usable output of an 8-watt amplifier depends on loudspeaker sensitivity, listening distance and the acoustic characteristics of the room.
A system that provides sufficient headroom in a smaller room may reach its limits sooner in a large open-plan space.
Customers who listen at high levels or use recordings with wide dynamic peaks should discuss the required headroom during the demonstration.
Installation and Ventilation
Position the OTO on a strong, level equipment support with sufficient open space for heat to escape.
Do not install it in a sealed cabinet or place another component directly over its ventilation openings.
Allow additional rear clearance for source, loudspeaker and mains cables.
Power-Up and Shutdown
Make all source and loudspeaker connections before switching the amplifier on.
Confirm that both loudspeakers are properly connected, select the required source and reduce the volume before applying power.
Allow the amplifier to complete its normal warm-up before critical listening. Switch it off when it will not be used to avoid unnecessary heat, power consumption and valve wear.
Valve Replacement
Switch the amplifier off, disconnect it from the mains and allow the valves and chassis to cool completely before touching a valve.
Replacement EL84 output valves should be suitable for the amplifier and supplied as an appropriately matched set.
