Audio Note AN-E High-Mass Speaker Stands

Audio T Verdict

The dedicated Audio Note AN-E stands are an important part of getting the best from the AN-E loudspeaker design rather than simply somewhere convenient to place the cabinets.

Their broad top plates provide the correct support for the AN-E enclosure, while the four fillable pillars and substantial steel construction create a rigid, high-mass platform. Adjustable locking spikes allow each stand to be levelled accurately on the listening-room floor.

Supplied in kit form, they require assembly and suitable dry filling material. Once correctly built, levelled and positioned, they provide the stability and correct listening height needed for a properly installed Audio Note AN-E system.

Audio Note AN-E Speaker Stands

The Audio Note AN-E Speaker Stands are dedicated high-mass supports designed to partner Audio Note AN-E loudspeakers.

Each stand uses a substantial top plate, matching base plate and four hollow upright pillars. The pillars can be filled with suitable high-density material to increase the total mass and create a more stable foundation for the loudspeaker.

The stands are supplied as a pair in kit form and include the plates, pillars, assembly bolts, adjustable spikes and Allen key required for construction.

Assembly and Filling Required

The stands are not supplied fully assembled. They must be constructed in accordance with the included instructions before the loudspeakers are installed.

Filling material and Blu-Tack are not listed as supplied accessories and should be obtained separately.

Designed for Audio Note AN-E Loudspeakers

The dimensions of the top plate and the height of the standard stand have been selected specifically for the Audio Note AN-E cabinet.

Supporting the loudspeaker at the intended height helps position its drive units correctly in relation to the seated listener. The broad top plate also supports the base of the cabinet more evenly than a small universal stand.

These are the standard AN-E stands. Certain Audio Note AN-E Signature loudspeakers use separate external crossovers and may require a different stand or crossover arrangement, so compatibility should be confirmed before ordering.

High-Mass Four-Pillar Construction

Each stand is assembled from a top plate, base plate and four hollow rectangular pillars.

Using four separate supports creates a broad and rigid structure beneath the loudspeaker. The open pillars also allow the owner or installer to add filling material before the top plate is fitted.

The standard unfilled weight is 11kg per stand. Filling the pillars increases this further, so the finished stands should be positioned carefully and moved by more than one person where necessary.

Fillable Upright Pillars

Audio Note recommends filling the hollow upright pillars with a clean, dry and suitably dense material.

Suitable options include dry metal particles or pre-dried sand. Where sand is used, it should be clean and free from moisture. Kiln-dried sand or suitable dry sand sold for aquariums and children's sandpits can be appropriate.

Ordinary construction-grade sharp sand should not be used unless it has been properly cleaned and dried, as retained moisture could damage the stand internally.

Preparing the Pillars for Filling

Before filling, the small opening at the bottom of each pillar should be sealed to prevent material escaping.

Audio Note suggests using a pliable and slightly adhesive material such as Blu-Tack or Plasticine. A small bead can also be placed around the lower edges of each pillar before it is bolted to the base plate.

The filling material should be added through the large central opening after the pillars have been secured to the base. Keep sand or metal particles away from the threaded bolt holes so the top plate can be fitted correctly.

Suitable Filling

  • Clean and completely dry material
  • Kiln-dried sand
  • Clean dry aquarium sand
  • Suitable dry metal particles
  • Material that flows easily into the pillars

Avoid Using

  • Damp or wet sand
  • Unprepared construction sand
  • Material containing debris
  • Anything that could retain moisture
  • Material that obstructs the bolt threads

Supplied in Kit Form

Each pair includes two top plates, two base plates and eight upright pillars, providing four pillars for each stand.

Sixteen countersunk bolts secure the top plates, while sixteen dome-headed bolts attach the pillars to the base plates. An Allen key is included for assembly.

All bolts should be tightened securely and checked again once each section has been assembled. They should also be inspected periodically after installation, particularly if the stands have been moved.

Adjustable and Lockable Floor Spikes

Eight adjustable spikes are supplied, providing four contact points for each stand.

The spikes screw into the underside of the base plates and can be adjusted independently to compensate for an uneven floor. Locking nuts secure the selected height once the stand is level.

A spirit level should be placed on the top plate during adjustment. All four spikes must contact the floor securely so the stand cannot rock or wobble.

Securing the Loudspeakers

Audio Note recommends placing four small pea-sized pieces of Blu-Tack on the upper surface of each top plate, with one positioned near each corner.

The AN-E cabinet can then be lowered carefully onto the stand and pressed down gently so the Blu-Tack compresses between the two surfaces.

This helps anchor the cabinet securely while providing a controlled interface between the loudspeaker and stand. Avoid using permanent adhesives, screws or fixings that could damage the cabinet veneer.

Standard and Taller Versions

The standard AN-E stand measures 295mm high, 380mm wide and 290mm deep once assembled.

Audio Note also lists a taller version measuring 380mm high. This may be useful where the listening seat is unusually high or a different driver height is required.

The appropriate height should be selected according to the loudspeaker model, listening position and room. Availability of the taller version should be confirmed before ordering.

Available Finishes

The current finish choices are Gloss Black, Matte Black, Gloss White and Matte White.

A black finish provides a discreet match with darker cabinets and equipment racks, while the white versions can suit lighter rooms and selected Audio Note cabinet finishes.

Finish availability can vary, so the preferred option should be confirmed when ordering the stands and loudspeakers.

Positioning the Complete Loudspeaker System

The stands should be placed on a dry, level and stable floor capable of supporting the combined weight of the filled stands and AN-E loudspeakers.

Once the speakers are installed, their position relative to the rear and side walls can be adjusted to achieve the desired bass balance and stereo image.

Audio Note AN-E loudspeakers are designed to work with room boundaries and are commonly positioned close to the rear wall or room corners. The stands make it easier to retain a secure and repeatable position while these adjustments are made.
