Audio T Verdict
The Monitor Audio C180 takes the same discreet approach as the smaller C165 but adds a substantially larger 8-inch bass driver, making it a particularly good choice for larger rooms, higher ceilings or installations where greater scale and output are required.
The pivoting C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter means the treble can still be directed towards the listening area, while the adjustable high-frequency level gives you some useful fine-tuning once the speaker is installed.
For whole-house music, discreet Hi-Fi or home cinema installations where you want a ceiling speaker with a little more authority, the C180 is a very sensible step up from the C165.
Monitor Audio C180
The C180 is a two-way in-ceiling loudspeaker from Monitor Audio's Basics architectural speaker range.
It combines a large 8-inch MMP II bass driver with a 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter, providing greater low-frequency extension and output than the smaller C165 while retaining a discreet in-ceiling installation.

Big Sound Without the Speaker Cabinets
The C180 is designed for installations where strong room-filling sound is required without conventional loudspeakers occupying floor, shelf or furniture space.
Once installed, the speaker body sits within the ceiling cavity and only the grille remains visible from the room.
The larger 8-inch driver makes the C180 particularly useful in bigger rooms, open-plan areas and spaces with higher ceilings, where a smaller architectural speaker may have to work harder to achieve the required output.
8-Inch MMP II Bass Driver
The C180 uses an 8-inch MMP II cone for bass and midrange reproduction.
MMP II stands for Metal Matrix Polymer II, a Monitor Audio diaphragm technology designed to combine useful rigidity with relatively low moving mass.
The larger cone area allows the C180 to move more air than the 6.5-inch C165, helping it produce greater low-frequency weight and dynamic scale.
50Hz Bass Extension
Monitor Audio specifies a frequency response extending from 50Hz to 25kHz.
This gives the C180 useful bass extension for an architectural speaker and means it can provide convincing full-range music reproduction in many installations without necessarily requiring a subwoofer.
A dedicated subwoofer can still be added where deeper bass, higher output or dedicated home cinema low-frequency effects are required.
C-CAM Gold Dome Tweeter
High frequencies are reproduced by Monitor Audio's 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter.
C-CAM stands for Ceramic-Coated Aluminium Magnesium and is one of Monitor Audio's long-established rigid and lightweight diaphragm technologies.
The Gold Dome tweeter extends the C180's response to 25kHz and is designed to provide detailed, controlled high-frequency reproduction across a wide listening area.
Pivoting Tweeter
The C180's tweeter can be pivoted towards the main listening area after the loudspeaker has been installed.
This is particularly useful with ceiling speakers because the ideal loudspeaker position is not always directly above the listener.
Aiming the tweeter towards the principal seating area can improve high-frequency clarity and stereo imaging compared with simply directing all of the treble vertically downwards.
Aiming the Tweeter
Once the C180 is installed, angle the Gold Dome tweeter towards the main listening position or coverage area. In a larger multi-speaker installation, the tweeters can be aimed individually to help provide more even high-frequency coverage throughout the room.
Adjustable High-Frequency Level
A three-position high-frequency level switch provides +3dB, 0dB and -3dB settings.
This allows some tonal adjustment after installation and can be useful when compensating for different room acoustics and furnishing.
A room with large amounts of soft furnishing may benefit from the increased setting, while a more reflective space with hard surfaces may suit the reduced treble position.
90dB Sensitivity
The Monitor Audio C180 has a sensitivity of 90dB at 1W/1m.
Nominal impedance is 6 ohms, helping make the C180 compatible with a wide selection of conventional stereo, AV and custom-install amplification.
The relatively high sensitivity also helps the C180 produce useful output without demanding excessive amplifier power.
120W Power Handling
The C180 has a specified RMS power handling of 120 watts.
Monitor Audio recommends amplification between 30 and 120 watts and specifies a maximum sound pressure level of 111.6dBA.
This gives the C180 considerably more output capability than many smaller ceiling speakers, making it particularly appropriate where higher playback levels or larger listening spaces are involved.
Ideal for Larger Rooms
The combination of an 8-inch driver, 90dB sensitivity and 120W power handling means the C180 is particularly well suited to areas where a smaller in-ceiling design may not provide enough scale.
Music and Multi-Room
- Large kitchens
- Open-plan living areas
- Dining and entertaining spaces
- Rooms with higher ceilings
- Whole-house audio installations
Home Cinema
- Overhead speaker applications
- Surround and effects channels
- Discreet multi-channel systems
- Use alongside cabinet speakers
- Subwoofer integration where required
Tri-Grip Installation System
The C180 uses Monitor Audio's three-position Tri-Grip dog fixing system.
As the fixings are tightened, they clamp the loudspeaker securely against the rear surface of the ceiling, allowing the speaker to be installed without a separate visible mounting frame.
The main chassis is manufactured from mineral-filled ABS and is designed specifically for architectural installation.
Installation Dimensions
The larger driver means the C180 requires a slightly larger ceiling opening than the C165.
Its principal installation dimensions are:
- Overall diameter: 285mm
- Overall depth including grille: 126mm
- Mounting depth: 122mm
- Cut-out diameter: 247mm
- Weight: 2.72kg
Before making the ceiling opening, check that sufficient cavity depth is available and confirm the position of joists, wiring, plumbing and other services.
Check Before Cutting
The C180 requires a 247mm circular cut-out and 122mm of mounting depth. Always inspect the ceiling cavity for joists, cables, plumbing and other obstructions before making the opening. If you are unsure about any part of the installation, use an appropriately qualified installer.
Paintable Round Grille
The C180 is supplied with a white CL-Round grille.
The grille can be painted where required, helping the installed speaker blend more closely with the surrounding ceiling.
Its 285mm overall diameter keeps the visible footprint relatively compact considering the 8-inch bass driver positioned behind it.
Optional Square Grille
An optional square grille can also be used with the C180.
The square version measures 285 x 285mm and can be useful where square architectural details, lighting or ceiling fittings make a rectangular aesthetic more appropriate.
CL-B Pre-Construction Bracket
The optional Monitor Audio CL-B pre-construction bracket is compatible with the C180.
It is intended for projects where speaker positions can be planned before the ceiling surface is installed, helping identify and maintain the correct opening during the construction process.
This can make installation particularly straightforward in new-build and major renovation projects.
CML-BOX Back Box
Monitor Audio also specifies the CML-BOX as the compatible optional back box for the C180.
The MDF enclosure provides a defined cabinet behind the ceiling speaker and can be useful where the installation requires greater acoustic control or isolation from the surrounding ceiling cavity.
The suitability of a back box should be considered during the planning stage because it requires significantly more space within the ceiling void than the loudspeaker alone.
C165 or C180?
Both models use the same basic architectural approach, but the driver size and output capability are different.
C165
- 6.5-inch MMP II bass driver
- 60Hz to 25kHz response
- 88.5dB sensitivity
- 65W RMS power handling
- 116mm mounting depth
- Ideal for smaller and medium rooms
C180
- 8-inch MMP II bass driver
- 50Hz to 25kHz response
- 90dB sensitivity
