Utopia sits at the top of Focal's passive headphone range for a reason. Rather than relying on multiple drivers, electronic correction or clever processing, each earcup uses a single 40mm pure-Beryllium M-dome driver working across the full frequency range.

It is an uncompromisingly traditional approach to high-end headphone listening. There is no Bluetooth, battery, internal DAC or active noise cancellation. Utopia simply takes the analogue signal from your headphone amplifier and turns it into music, which means the quality of everything connected before it matters.

The open-back construction is just as fundamental. The rear of each driver is allowed to operate freely rather than being contained within a sealed earcup, while the internal grilles follow the M shape of the diaphragm to minimise obstruction. The trade-off is equally clear: Utopia offers practically no isolation and your music will be audible to anyone sitting nearby.

The 80-ohm impedance is not particularly extreme for a serious home headphone, but Utopia deserves a genuinely capable source and headphone amplifier. This is not about chasing enormous power figures. Low noise, good control, quality digital-to-analogue conversion and a well-designed analogue stage matter far more.

Reference Open-Back Design

Instead of sealing the rear output inside an enclosed earcup, the honeycomb structure allows air and sound to move freely through the back of the headphone.

40mm Pure-Beryllium M-Dome Drivers

Each earcup uses a 40mm full-range electrodynamic driver with an M-shaped diaphragm made from pure Beryllium.
