The Russell K RED 100 is one of those loudspeakers that makes considerably more sense once you understand what its designer is trying to achieve. Rather than making the cabinet as heavy, damped and acoustically dead as possible, Russell Kaufman takes almost the opposite approach.
The 400mm-high cabinet uses relatively thin 16mm MDF walls, a thicker 19mm front baffle and no conventional internal damping material. Instead, two perforated internal shelves brace the enclosure and acoustically load the air around the 6.5-inch bass/mid driver.
That philosophy continues into the crossover. The 165mm impregnated-paper bass/mid driver and 25mm soft-dome tweeter cross over at 2.2kHz with a nominal 12dB-per-octave slope, but Russell K keeps the electrical network deliberately simple, with only one component directly in the signal path of each driver.
The result is a speaker designed around immediacy, timing and dynamic expression rather than maximum cabinet damping or an elaborate crossover. That gives the RED 100 a particularly direct and energetic presentation, with enough scale and bass extension to make it feel considerably larger than many conventional standmount designs.
It is not an especially sensitive loudspeaker. At around 86dB, it benefits from a capable amplifier rather than simply the cheapest amplifier with an adequate wattage figure. The nominal 8-ohm impedance is relatively conventional, but amplifier quality, current delivery and control still matter.
The front-firing reflex port also makes room placement more flexible than some rear-ported standmounts, although that should not be mistaken for permission to push the RED 100 hard against a wall without experimentation.
Add the dedicated JK100 stands, spend some time on positioning and give them an amplifier with good rhythmic and dynamic ability and the RED 100 demonstrates very clearly why Russell K has developed such a distinctive following.

The Russell K Approach to Loudspeaker Cabinets
Most conventional loudspeaker design seeks to suppress cabinet vibration and absorb much of the acoustic energy generated inside the enclosure.
Russell K approaches the problem differently.
The RED 100 is deliberately built without the wool, foam or other absorbent material commonly found inside a loudspeaker cabinet.
Rather than attempting to make the enclosure completely inert, Russell K controls cabinet behaviour through carefully selected panel thicknesses, internal shelves and the acoustic loading of the drivers.
The intention is to minimise stored energy and allow the cabinet to stop responding quickly when the music signal stops.
Undamped Does Not Mean Uncontrolled
The RED 100's lack of conventional internal wadding should not be confused with an empty box containing no acoustic design.
Two perforated internal shelves brace the cabinet and divide the internal air volume, while the reflex alignment and crossover have been developed around the behaviour of the complete enclosure.
16mm MDF Cabinet Walls
The top, sides, rear and other main cabinet panels use 16mm MDF.
That is relatively light compared with loudspeakers that rely on very thick walls, multiple constrained layers or extensive damping compounds.
This reduced panel mass forms part of Russell K's approach to controlling how quickly energy is released from the enclosure rather than simply trying to absorb as much of it as possible.
19mm Front Baffle
The front baffle is increased to 19mm thickness.
This provides a more substantial mounting surface for the drive units while allowing the remaining enclosure panels to follow Russell K's lighter construction philosophy.
Two Acoustic-Loading Shelves
Inside the RED 100 are two bracing shelves positioned above and below the bass/mid driver.
Each shelf contains multiple apertures rather than completely sealing one part of the cabinet from another.
The shelves perform two roles:
- Increasing mechanical control of the cabinet panels
- Controlling movement of air through the enclosure
This arrangement is fundamental to the RED 100 design and replaces the more conventional combination of extensive cabinet bracing and absorbent internal damping.
No Conventional Internal Wadding
The RED 100 cabinet is intentionally free from conventional acoustic stuffing.
Damping material absorbs internal sound energy, but it can also alter the effective behaviour of the air volume within a loudspeaker enclosure.
Russell K's design philosophy is to control this energy mechanically and acoustically through cabinet dimensions, shelving and port tuning instead.
It is an unconventional approach and one of the main reasons the RED 100 should ideally be heard rather than judged purely by conventional loudspeaker-design assumptions.
6.5-Inch Impregnated-Paper Bass/Mid Driver
A 6.5-inch bass/midrange unit handles the majority of the audible spectrum.
Its cone is manufactured from impregnated paper with a curved profile developed to optimise acoustic behaviour.
Paper remains widely used in loudspeaker drive units because its stiffness, mass and internal damping can be carefully adjusted through cone profile, pulp composition and treatment.
The driver uses a high-power ferrite magnet system and 25mm voice coil.
Aluminium Voice-Coil Former
The bass/mid driver uses a 25mm voice coil wound on an aluminium former.
The former supports the voice-coil windings and helps transfer heat away from the coil during operation.
Faraday Distortion-Cancelling Copper Ring
A copper Faraday ring is incorporated into the bass/mid motor system.
Its purpose is to help linearise the magnetic field around the voice coil and reduce distortion associated with changes in inductance as the driver moves.
A similar approach is used within the tweeter motor.
25mm Soft-Dome Tweeter
High frequencies are reproduced by a 25mm soft-dome tweeter.

A well-designed soft dome can combine low moving mass with controlled behaviour across the audible treble range.
The final performance depends on considerably more than dome material alone, including:

Russell K develops the tweeter, bass/mid driver and crossover as a complete system rather than treating any one component as an isolated specification.
Minimalist Crossover
The RED 100's crossover is deliberately simple.
The two drivers cross over at approximately 2200Hz with a nominal 12dB-per-octave slope.
Russell K's key principle is to minimise the number of electrical components directly between the amplifier and each drive unit.
Each driver therefore has only one component directly within its signal path.
The intention is to reduce electrical complexity and preserve the transient and phase behaviour of the drivers as far as possible.
Drivers Connected in Positive Phase
Both drive units operate in positive electrical phase.
The crossover has been developed to optimise acoustic phase through the transition region without requiring one driver to be electrically inverted.
This forms part of Russell K's focus on timing and coherent integration between the two drive units.
2.2kHz Crossover Frequency
The nominal crossover point is 2200Hz.
This gives the 6.5-inch driver responsibility for bass and the majority of the midrange before handing over to the 25mm tweeter.
The crossover frequency itself should not be assessed in isolation. The acoustic slopes, phase response and behaviour of both drivers around that region determine how smoothly they integrate.
Enclosed-Field Ferrite-Core Bass Inductor
The bass crossover uses an enclosed-field ferrite-core inductor chosen for low DC resistance and reduced stray magnetic field.
Low resistance is useful because unnecessary series resistance between amplifier and bass driver can influence electrical damping and efficiency.
Misaligned Zobel Tweeter Network
Russell K uses what it describes as a misaligned Zobel network to provide tweeter attenuation rather than a conventional L-pad resistor arrangement.
This forms part of the company's effort to obtain the required level and impedance behaviour without adding unnecessary components directly into the tweeter signal path.
Front-Firing Reflex Port
The RED 100 uses a bass-reflex enclosure with the port positioned on the front baffle beneath the bass/mid driver.

Low frequencies radiate throughout the room and the complete cabinet still interacts with nearby walls.
Moving the RED 100 closer to a wall will usually increase perceived bass output regardless of the fact that its port faces forwards.

Russell K specifies an in-room frequency range of approximately 30Hz to 20kHz.
The phrase in-room is important.
A loudspeaker's low-frequency output changes substantially according to:

An 86dB loudspeaker in a modest room at sensible listening levels requires considerably less continuous power than many people imagine, but musical peaks can demand substantial short-term headroom.
A clean lower-powered amplifier can therefore outperform a nominally more powerful design that is poorly suited to the loudspeaker.

Clipping Can Damage Loudspeakers
A smaller amplifier is not automatically safer than a powerful one.
If an amplifier is repeatedly driven beyond its clean output capability, clipping can generate high-frequency energy capable of damaging a tweeter.

Single-Wire Speaker Terminals
The RED 100 uses one pair of speaker terminals per cabinet.

Then adjust in small increments.
Distance From the Rear Wall
Moving the RED 100 towards the wall behind it will generally increase low-frequency reinforcement.
Moving it further into the room may reduce bass weight but improve definition and soundstage depth.
Listen for a balance where bass is full but does not become thick or dominate vocals and instruments.
Distance From Corners
Corner placement usually provides even greater bass reinforcement because the speaker interacts with two nearby walls rather than one.
If bass becomes uneven or overpowering, move the speaker away from the corner before changing electronics or adding room-correction equipment.
Speaker Spacing
If the speakers are too close together, the soundstage can become narrow.
Move them too far apart and the centre image may become weak or disconnected.
Use a familiar recording with a centrally positioned vocal and adjust spacing until the voice remains solidly located between the loudspeakers without reducing overall image width.
Toe-In
Toe-in describes rotating the speakers so that they point progressively more towards the listening position.
Changing toe-in can affect:
