Naim Super Lumina Analogue Interconnects

Naim Super Lumina interconnects were developed alongside the Statement amplification project and apply the same cable construction and mechanical-decoupling principles to compatible Naim source, pre-amplifier and power-amplifier connections.

This Audio T page contains four different cable assemblies. They are not interchangeable: the options cover a legacy NAP 250 connection, a channel-specific pair for NAP 300 and NAP 500 systems, an RCA-source-to-DIN connection and a DIN-to-DIN source interconnect.

The exact source, pre-amplifier, power supply, amplifier generation and socket layout must be identified before ordering. In particular, the XLR connector used by a legacy NAP 250 is Naim-wired for stereo and is not a conventional balanced XLR input.

Naim Super Lumina Analogue Interconnects

Super Lumina is Naim's reference analogue cable range for compatible systems. The interconnect design uses individually insulated, silver-plated copper conductors, a tin-plated copper shield and a flexible outer jacket intended to control both electrical interference and mechanically transmitted energy.

Four configurations are offered through this product selector. Select by connector type, cable direction, channel arrangement and length rather than by price or appearance alone.

Choose by the Exact Components

A DIN plug or XLR plug can use a model-specific pin arrangement. Matching connector shapes do not establish electrical compatibility, and the legacy Naim XLR connections described here must not be treated as ordinary balanced audio sockets.

Give Audio T the full model names of both connected products, including the power supply where it provides the pre-amplifier output. This allows the correct stereo or channel-specific assembly to be identified.

Developed from the Statement Programme

Naim developed Super Lumina while engineering the Statement amplification system. The project then expanded into a wider range of interconnect and loudspeaker-cable configurations for Statement, 500 Series and compatible Classic systems.

The purpose of the design is to reduce the influence of external and internal interference while preserving the intended signal and grounding arrangement of the connected Naim products. This page covers analogue interconnects only and not Super Lumina loudspeaker cable.

Individually Insulated Conductors

The cable uses multi-strand silver-plated copper conductors of different diameters. Signal, return, ground and shield conductors are individually manufactured for their specific functions rather than using one identical conductor throughout.

These conductors are individually insulated and enclosed within a tin-plated copper shield. A soft outer jacket helps the cable route naturally and reduces the transmission of unwanted mechanical energy into the connectors and equipment sockets.

Naim Air-PLUG Decoupling

Super Lumina DIN and XLR terminations use an advanced form of Naim's Air-PLUG technology. Multiple aluminium rings form an articulating rear section intended to inhibit the transfer of vibration through the connector body.

On DIN-terminated versions, the connector pins float within their housing so the decoupling continues close to the equipment interface. This deliberate movement should not be mistaken for a loose or defective plug.

Handle the connector by its main body, align it with the socket and insert it without twisting. Do not use the cable or articulated rings as a lever when connecting or removing the plug.

Legacy NAP 250 Stereo XLR Connection

The legacy NAP 250 and NAP 250 DR use one three-pin Cannon XLR input for both audio channels. Although it resembles a standard professional XLR socket, it is a single-ended Naim connection carrying left and right signals through one cable.

The 1m four-pin-DIN-to-stereo-XLR Super Lumina is the corresponding single-cable option. One assembly completes the normal stereo pre-amplifier-to-power-amplifier signal path.

Not for the Current New Classic NAP 250

The current New Classic NAP 250 uses separate standard balanced XLR inputs. It does not use the single Naim-wired stereo XLR arrangement found on the legacy NAP 250 and NAP 250 DR.

New Classic products require the appropriate balanced or generation-bridging interconnect. Ask Audio T to confirm the correct cable whenever the amplifier is simply described as a NAP 250.

NAP 300 and NAP 500 Channel Pair

Legacy NAP 300 and NAP 500 systems use separate channel-specific signal cables. The Super Lumina left-and-right option therefore contains two 1m four-pin-DIN-to-XLR cables rather than one stereo lead.

Keep the left and right cables matched to their designated outputs and amplifier inputs. The pair should not be replaced with the single stereo NAP 250 version, even though the connector families appear similar.

The pre-amplifier output may be presented on its associated Naim power supply, depending on the system. Confirm the complete pre-amplifier, power-supply and power-amplifier combination before installation.

RCA Source to Naim DIN Input

The 1.5m RCA-to-five-pin-DIN option connects the left and right analogue outputs of a compatible source to a five-pin DIN input on a Naim pre-amplifier or integrated amplifier.

The two RCA plugs belong at the signal-source end and the five-pin 180-degree DIN plug belongs at the receiving Naim component. Observe the left and right RCA channel markings and the cable's source-end indication.

This option is for line-level analogue audio. It is not a phono cable for a bare turntable cartridge and it does not convert digital audio.

DIN Source to DIN Pre-Amplifier

The 1.5m five-pin-DIN-to-five-pin-DIN option is intended for compatible Naim source-to-pre-amplifier connections. It is one stereo interconnect, despite the current selector describing it as a single cable.

Follow the cable's source-end marker so that the assembly is installed in its intended direction. Confirm that both products use the matching five-pin 180-degree analogue signal arrangement.

Signal Cable Only

These Super Lumina options carry analogue audio signals. They do not replace a SNAIC, Burndy, mains cable, speaker cable or system-automation connection, and they should not be used where a product requires power through the same lead.

The wider Super Lumina range has included other connector and length combinations, but they are not all represented by this Audio T selector. A balanced XLR-to-XLR Super Lumina, longer DIN interconnect or active-system cable must be specified separately.

Installation and Cable Dressing

Switch off the power amplifier and associated power supplies before fitting or removing an interconnect. Turn the pre-amplifier volume down and allow the system to settle before changing any connection.

Align every DIN and XLR connector carefully and insert it without force. On a channel pair, verify left and right identification at both ends before restoring power.

Route the cable in a relaxed curve with no tight bends, crushing or tension at the Air-PLUG joints. Avoid trapping the outer jacket beneath equipment feet or pulling the cable tightly against the rack.

Keep analogue interconnects sensibly separated from mains leads, power supplies and large transformers where the equipment layout permits. Do not bind signal and mains cables together for neatness.

Length and Custom Ordering

The two pre-to-power options on this page are 1m, while the RCA-to-DIN and DIN-to-DIN source interconnects are 1.5m. Measure the actual socket-to-socket route and allow enough length for gentle bends and connector access.

Which Super Lumina interconnect do I need?

It depends on both connected components. Supply Audio T with the exact source, pre-amplifier, power supply and power-amplifier model names so the required connector and channel arrangement can be identified.

Is the four-pin-DIN-to-XLR option balanced?

No. The legacy NAP 250 uses one Naim-wired three-pin XLR for a single-ended stereo input. Its connector should not be treated as a standard balanced XLR interface.

Will the stereo DIN-to-XLR cable fit a New Classic NAP 250?

It is not the correct cable. The New Classic NAP 250 has separate balanced XLR inputs and requires the appropriate balanced or generation-specific connection.

Why does the NAP 300 or NAP 500 option contain two cables?

Those legacy amplifiers use separate left and right signal connections. The pair contains one channel-specific cable for each side.

Is the DIN-to-DIN option a stereo pair?

No pair is required. One five-pin-DIN-to-five-pin-DIN cable carries both left and right analogue channels between compatible source and pre-amplifier sockets.

Which way does the RCA-to-DIN version connect?
