The Dynavector DRT XV-1t is the sort of cartridge where everything else in the record-playing system deserves equal scrutiny. With a 0.35mV output, solid-boron cantilever, PF line-contact diamond and 12g body, this is a serious low-output moving-coil design intended for equally serious turntables, tonearms and phono stages.
The engineering goes considerably further than the specification sheet might initially suggest. Dynavector uses a cross-shaped armature carrying extremely fine 16-micron coil windings, Alnico column magnets and its Flux Damper technology to control the behaviour of the magnetic circuit.
The body is equally distinctive. Rather than a conventional aluminium or plastic housing, the cartridge uses a precision-machined section of carefully selected heat-treated bamboo beneath an Urushi lacquer finish. This provides the magnetic assembly with a rigid structure while giving the XV-1t its unmistakable appearance.
Its electrical requirements need proper attention. The 0.35mV output is firmly in low-output MC territory, while internal impedance is 24 ohms and Dynavector recommends a phono-stage load above 75 ohms. A standard MM input is therefore not an appropriate partner on its own.
The cartridge itself also weighs 12g, considerably more than many conventional designs, so tonearm counterweight range and cartridge compatibility need checking before installation. Tracking force should be set within Dynavector's specified 1.8–2.2g range.
At this level, professional installation makes a great deal of sense. Cartridge alignment, tracking force, bias, tonearm geometry and phono-stage settings all influence the result, and there is little point investing in a cartridge of this standard without getting those fundamentals right.
