Naim StageLine N, E, K and S Phono Stage

Audio T Verdict

The Naim StageLine is a compact, externally powered phono stage available in four factory-configured versions. The N model is designed for moving-magnet cartridges, while the E, K and S models provide different sensitivity and loading arrangements for moving-coil cartridges.

Choosing the correct letter is essential because cartridge type, input resistance, capacitance and sensitivity are not changed by a user-accessible switch. Audio T should match the StageLine to the cartridge specification before an order is placed.

The StageLine requires a compatible 24V Naim power source. This may be provided by a suitable powered Naim pre-amplifier or integrated amplifier connection, or by a separate FlatCap, HiCap or SuperCap arrangement. A power supply is not built in.

Naim StageLine N, E, K and S Phono Stage

Designed for turntables fitted with moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridges, the StageLine amplifies the very low-level cartridge signal so it can be connected to a suitable line-level input in a hi-fi system.

Stereo RCA inputs accommodate conventional cartridge leads, while Naim DIN connectivity supports the audio output and compatible 24V power arrangements. Its half-width case is easy to accommodate, but careful siting and cartridge matching remain important for low-noise operation.

Select the Cartridge Version Before Ordering

N, E, K and S are separate factory configurations, not menu choices or external switches. The correct version depends on the cartridge manufacturer's output and recommended electrical load.

Do not choose solely from the words moving magnet or moving coil. Moving-coil designs can differ substantially in output, resistance and preferred loading, so the complete cartridge specification should be checked.

Why Cartridge Loading Matters

A phono cartridge produces a much smaller signal than a normal line-level source. The phono stage must provide suitable gain while presenting the cartridge with an appropriate resistance and capacitance.

Too little or too much gain can lead to inadequate volume, excess noise or overload. An unsuitable electrical load can also change the cartridge's frequency balance and behaviour. The StageLine variants address these different requirements through fixed internal configurations.

Cartridge output is a useful starting point, but it should not be used in isolation. Audio T can compare the manufacturer's recommended load, output level and system gain with the complete StageLine specification.

RCA Cartridge Inputs

The StageLine uses a stereo pair of RCA sockets for the turntable input. Connect the left and right cartridge leads to the matching channels and attach the turntable earth lead to the StageLine signal-ground terminal when the turntable provides one.

Keep the cartridge leads away from mains cables, plug-top power supplies, transformers and wireless equipment where practical. The very small phono signal is more susceptible to hum and interference than a normal line-level source.

Naim DIN Output and Power Arrangements

The StageLine has two Naim DIN sockets that support its signal-output and 24V power requirements. The correct cable arrangement depends on whether it is powered from a compatible Naim pre-amplifier or integrated amplifier, or from a separate FlatCap, HiCap or SuperCap.

A compatible powered Naim input can carry the necessary connection through the specified five-pin DIN route. When a separate power supply is used, the StageLine requires the correct power connection and a separate signal route to the amplifier. Do not assume that every Naim DIN socket is wired for the same purpose.

The current product specification states that a standard interconnect is supplied. Additional or alternative leads may be needed for some external power-supply and non-Naim amplifier combinations, so the entire connection plan should be confirmed before ordering.

A Compatible 24V Supply Is Required

The StageLine has no mains inlet and cannot operate on its own. Power must come from a compatible Naim 24V output or an appropriate dedicated Naim power supply.

Do not connect an arbitrary external adaptor. Connector shape alone does not confirm the voltage, polarity, grounding or pin arrangement required by the StageLine.

Compatible Naim System Routes

Published compatibility includes selected NaimUniti, NAIT XS and SuperNait products, as well as NAC 152 XS, NAC 202, NAC 282, NAC 252 and NAC 552 pre-amplifiers. Dedicated supply options include the FlatCap XS, HiCap and SuperCap.

Many of these products span different generations or are themselves no longer current. Check the exact model, rear-panel socket and existing power-supply connections rather than relying on the family name alone.

New Classic Naim products should not be assumed to provide the legacy powered DIN arrangement. Audio T can identify the correct route or an alternative phono stage for a newer system.

Using the StageLine with Other Amplifiers

A StageLine can be considered for a non-Naim amplifier when a compatible Naim power source and the correct DIN-to-line-level signal lead are available. The amplifier connection must be made to a normal line-level input rather than another phono input.

Cable wiring, grounding and power arrangements must be checked as a complete system. Ask Audio T to specify every required component instead of assuming that a generic DIN-to-RCA cable will be suitable.

Compact Naim Casework

At 57mm high, 121mm wide and 187mm deep, the StageLine occupies relatively little shelf space. Its black powder-coated case and front panel match the compact Naim accessory format.

Small size does not make placement unimportant. Keep the StageLine away from power amplifiers, large transformers and power supplies where the available cable length and equipment support allow.

Installation and Power Sequence

Install the StageLine in its final position before making connections. Switch off the power amplifier and associated power supplies, then turn the pre-amplifier volume down before connecting or disconnecting any leads.

Connect the turntable to the RCA inputs, attach the signal ground if required, and then fit the approved DIN signal and power connections for the chosen system layout. Align DIN plugs with their socket keys and never force or twist them.

Source components and power supplies should normally be switched on before the power amplifier. Switch the power amplifier off first when shutting the system down, and wait before changing any connections.

If hum is present, do not add multiple earth paths at random. Check the cartridge wiring, turntable earth, StageLine placement, DIN connections and complete system grounding with Audio T.

Current Availability

Naim now lists the StageLine as no longer available in its current product range. Audio T's page offers N, E, K and S selections, but availability of each factory configuration should be confirmed before ordering.

The exact letter should also be recorded for future cartridge changes. A replacement cartridge that works with one StageLine version cannot automatically be assumed to suit another.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which StageLine version do I need?

It depends on the cartridge's type, output and recommended electrical load. N is the moving-magnet version, while E, K and S are moving-coil configurations with different sensitivity and loading. Audio T can check the full cartridge specification.

Can I switch the StageLine between moving magnet and moving coil?

No. The versions are factory configured and there is no user-accessible MM and MC selector.

Are the E, K and S versions interchangeable?

No. Their input sensitivity and electrical loading differ. Select the version that matches the cartridge manufacturer's requirements.

Does the StageLine include a power supply?

No. It requires 24V from a compatible powered Naim connection or a suitable FlatCap, HiCap or SuperCap arrangement.

Can my Naim amplifier power it directly?

Some legacy Naim pre-amplifiers and integrated amplifiers provide a compatible powered DIN connection, but not every model does. Confirm the exact product and socket before connecting the StageLine.

Can I connect it to a non-Naim amplifier?

Potentially, provided the StageLine has a compatible Naim power source and the correct DIN-to-line-level signal cable. Audio T should specify the complete arrangement.

Should the StageLine connect to another phono input?

No. Its amplified output should feed the appropriate line-level or powered Naim input. Connecting one phono stage into another can overload the second stage and produce incorrect equalisation.

Does it accept RCA turntable leads?

Yes. The StageLine has separate left and right RCA inputs and a signal-ground terminal.

Is a standard interconnect included?

The published Audio T specification lists a standard interconnect as supplied. Some power-supply and amplifier combinations require additional or different Naim cables, so confirm the full system requirement.

Why can I hear hum?

Hum can result from placement near transformers, an incorrect or duplicated earth path, cartridge wiring or the wrong cable arrangement. Switch the system off and ask Audio T to check the installation rather than repeatedly changing live connections.

Is the StageLine still a current Naim product?

Naim lists the StageLine as no longer available in its current range. Audio T offers four selectable versions, but stock and factory-configuration availability should be confirmed.
