Protect the Supporting Surface
The table stand includes a rubber mat underneath its base.
Place the speaker on a stable surface large enough to support its complete footprint and route the cable so it cannot pull the speaker towards the edge.
Wall Bracket Included
A dedicated wall bracket and matching cover are supplied with each M-1.
The speaker’s supporting stem connects directly to the wall bracket, creating an integrated installation without the need for a generic third-party speaker mount.

Wall Fixings Are Not Supplied
Screws and wall plugs must be selected according to the wall construction and are not included with the speaker.
The wall and fixings must safely support the M-1’s weight. Seek professional installation advice where there is any uncertainty about plasterboard, masonry, concealed cables or pipework.
Do Not Mount the M-1 on a Ceiling
The supplied bracket is intended for wall mounting only.
Bowers & Wilkins specifically warns against attaching the M-1 to a ceiling.
For overhead home cinema channels, use suitably designed in-ceiling speakers or another product approved for secure overhead installation.
Vertical and Horizontal Orientation
The M-1 can operate vertically in its conventional satellite-speaker position or horizontally for centre-channel use.
Changing to horizontal orientation requires repositioning the ball-joint assembly and rotating the supporting stem using the supplied Torx key.
The front Bowers & Wilkins badge can also be rotated through 90 degrees so it remains correctly aligned.
Follow the Official Instructions
The mounting system contains internal wiring and several mechanical locking points.
Follow the supplied manual carefully when changing the ball-joint position, and make sure no internal wires are trapped when the rear cover is refitted.
Optional M-1 Floor Stands
Dedicated M-1 floor stands are available separately for installations where shelves and wall mounting are unsuitable.
The stands raise the speakers closer to seated ear height and allow the speaker cable to be routed discreetly through the supporting column.
The current stands are designed for this generation of M-1 and should not be assumed to fit earlier versions.
Stereo Music Systems
A pair of M-1 speakers can form a compact conventional stereo system.
Bowers & Wilkins recommends creating an angle of approximately 40 to 60 degrees between the speakers as viewed from the main listening position.
If the angle is too narrow, stereo separation may be limited. If it is too wide, a gap may appear in the centre of the soundstage.
Mount or position the speakers close to seated ear height, or angle them towards ear level using the adjustable mounting system.
Using the M-1 Without a Subwoofer
The M-1 can be used on its own for music in smaller rooms and at moderate listening levels.
Its 64Hz–23kHz ±3dB frequency response provides useful bass extension for such a compact enclosure.
However, it cannot reproduce the deepest bass of a larger standmount or floorstanding loudspeaker, so expectations should remain appropriate to its size.
Adding a Subwoofer
A suitable powered subwoofer extends the system’s low-frequency response and reduces the amount of deep bass demanded from the M-1 speakers.
The compact Bowers & Wilkins ASW608 is the subwoofer used in the current MT-50 package and is a natural visual and practical partner for smaller rooms.
Correct crossover frequency, phase, level and placement are essential. The subwoofer should reinforce the M-1 speakers without drawing attention to its physical position.
Use Bass Management Where Available
In a home cinema system, configure the M-1 speakers as bass-managed or “small” speakers and allow the AV receiver to direct deep bass towards the subwoofer.
The ideal crossover setting depends on the room, subwoofer and listening level, so it should be established during system calibration.
Home Cinema Front Speakers
M-1 speakers can be used for the front left, centre and right channels of a compact home cinema system.
The left and right speakers should be positioned close to the vertical centre of the screen and approximately 0.5 metres from its sides as a useful starting point.
The centre speaker should be positioned above or below the screen, choosing whichever location places it closest to seated ear height.
Using identical speakers across all three front channels helps maintain a consistent tonal character as voices and effects move across the screen.
Horizontal Centre-Channel Use
One M-1 can be turned horizontally and positioned centrally beneath or above the screen.
The mounting stem is moved from the bottom to the centre of the cabinet, allowing the speaker to sit or mount securely in landscape orientation.
The speaker should remain centred in relation to the picture and should be angled towards the principal seating area where required.
Surround-Speaker Placement
M-1 speakers can be used for side or rear surround channels in 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 systems.
Bowers & Wilkins recommends positioning surround speakers at least 0.6 metres above head height to create a more diffuse and enveloping effect.
In a typical 5.1 system, the surrounds should sit to the sides or slightly behind the principal listening position, according to the room layout.
