Optoma EGA 16:9 Electric Projector Screens

Audio T Verdict

The Optoma EGA range provides a practical way to add a large projection surface to a room without permanently covering the wall. The screen lowers electrically when required and retracts into its curved white aluminium case after use.

Available in 92, 106 and 120-inch 16:9 sizes, the range covers anything from a relatively compact living-room cinema to a substantial dedicated projection system. All three versions use 1.0-gain glass-fibre matte-white material with an ISF-certified projection surface.

The integrated control system is particularly useful. The screen can be operated using its infrared remote or inline control, while 12V trigger and RS232 connections allow it to be incorporated into a compatible home-cinema or automated installation.

Floating mounting brackets allow the screen case to be fitted to a wall or ceiling and adjusted horizontally before being secured. Hanging brackets also make suspended installation possible where the ceiling height or room construction requires it.

The EGA is a conventional non-tensioned electric screen rather than a tab-tensioned model. It offers a strong balance of size, convenience and installation flexibility, but the correct screen size and mounting position should be established before ordering.

Optoma EGA Electric Projector Screens

Optoma EGA electric projector screens combine a motorised drop-down mechanism with 16:9 matte-white projection material, an aluminium housing and several control options.

The Audio T listing includes three screen sizes:

  • Optoma DE-9092EGA: 92 inches
  • Optoma DE-9106EGA: 106 inches
  • Optoma DE-9120EGA: 120 inches

Each measurement refers to the diagonal size of the visible 16:9 picture area rather than the width of the complete screen case.

Electric Drop-Down Operation

The screen material is raised and lowered by an integrated tubular motor. At the end of a viewing session, the material retracts into the aluminium case, leaving the wall beneath available for other purposes.

This makes an electric screen particularly useful in living rooms, multipurpose spaces and installations where a permanent fixed-frame screen would be impractical.

The screen's stopping position can be adjusted so that it lowers to the required height. This allows the visible picture area to be aligned with the projector and seating position rather than always using the maximum possible drop.

Infrared Remote Control

An infrared remote provides straightforward control from within the room. A built-in infrared receiver is incorporated into the screen, while an external infrared receiver can be used when the case is positioned behind a pelmet or where the internal receiver would be obstructed.

An inline control is also provided, allowing the screen to be operated without the remote handset.

Automatic 12V Trigger Operation

The screen can be connected to the 12V trigger output of a compatible projector or AV control system. In a correctly configured installation, switching on the projector can lower the screen automatically, while switching the projector off can return it to its case.

Not every projector includes a 12V trigger output, so the connections on the chosen model should be checked before installation.

RS232 Control

RS232 allows the EGA screen to be incorporated into a compatible home-automation or custom-installation system. This gives an installer another method of coordinating the screen with the projector, lighting and other room equipment.

The exact control method will depend on the rest of the system and should be planned before concealed control cables or mains connections are installed.

Glass-Fibre Matte-White Screen Material

The EGA range uses glass-fibre-supported matte-white projection material with a gain of 1.0. A 1.0-gain surface is intended to distribute reflected light evenly rather than concentrating it into a narrow central viewing position.

The glass-fibre support layer helps the material resist stretching and deformation during repeated lowering and retraction. The surface is designed for front projection and can be used with Full HD and 4K UHD projectors.

A projection screen does not have its own native resolution. The visible detail will depend on the projector, source material, image size, viewing distance, focus and installation accuracy.

ISF-Certified Projection Surface

Optoma describes the EGA material as ISF certified for colour reproduction. The surface is designed to reflect the projector's red, green and blue output without deliberately altering the colour balance.

Screen certification does not replace projector setup or calibration. Picture mode, brightness, greyscale, colour and room conditions must still be adjusted appropriately if accurate reproduction is required.

Black Borders and Extended Top Drop

The visible picture area is surrounded by black borders intended to provide a clearly defined image edge and improve perceived contrast at the boundary of the projected picture.

All three 16:9 EGA models include a 300mm black top border. This additional drop helps position the picture at a comfortable height when the screen case must be mounted close to the ceiling.

92-Inch Optoma DE-9092EGA

The DE-9092EGA provides a 2030 x 1145mm visible picture area. Its complete case measures 2280mm wide, making it the most compact option in this Audio T listing.

A 92-inch screen may suit smaller cinema rooms and living spaces where the seating distance, available wall width or projector throw distance would make a larger image uncomfortable or impractical.

106-Inch Optoma DE-9106EGA

The DE-9106EGA has a 2340 x 1320mm visible picture area and a 2590mm-wide case. It sits between the 92 and 120-inch versions and provides a sizeable cinema image without requiring the full width of the largest model.

For many rooms, 106 inches offers a useful compromise between image impact, viewing distance, projector brightness and installation space.

120-Inch Optoma DE-9120EGA

The DE-9120EGA provides a 2656 x 1494mm visible picture area. Its case measures 2906mm wide, so the complete wall or ceiling space must be checked carefully before ordering.

A 120-inch image can create a particularly convincing cinema experience, but it places greater demands on projector brightness, resolution, throw distance and seating position.

Wall, Ceiling or Suspended Installation

The curved aluminium case can be mounted directly to a suitable wall or ceiling using the supplied floating brackets. The brackets can be positioned at different points along the case, which provides useful flexibility when aligning them with joists, studs or other secure fixing points.

The mounting arrangement also allows some horizontal adjustment before the case is secured. Hanging brackets are supplied for installations where the screen needs to be suspended below a high ceiling.

Check the Structure Before Installation

These are large and relatively heavy motorised screens. The mounting surface, brackets and fixings must be suitable for the selected model's weight. Electrical work and installation above seating areas should be completed by appropriately qualified installers.

Choosing the Correct Screen Size

The largest screen that physically fits the wall is not automatically the best choice. Viewing distance, projector resolution, available brightness and the type of material being watched should all be considered.

The projector must also be capable of producing the chosen image size from the intended mounting position. Its throw ratio, zoom range and lens-shift limits should be checked before the screen or projector mount is permanently installed.

An Audio T specialist can help calculate the required image width and projector distance using the specifications of the complete system.

Room Lighting and Image Quality

The EGA uses conventional matte-white material and is not an ambient-light-rejecting screen. For the strongest contrast and black levels, direct daylight and room lighting should be reduced during viewing.

Dark, non-reflective surfaces around the screen can also improve perceived contrast by reducing the amount of projected light reflected back towards the picture.

Not Acoustically Transparent

The EGA screen material is not specified as acoustically transparent. Front speakers and a centre speaker should therefore be positioned outside the visible screen area rather than behind it.

Speaker placement should be considered when selecting the screen size, as a screen that occupies the entire available wall may leave insufficient space for the front channels.

Conventional Electric Screen, Not Tab-Tensioned

The EGA is a conventional roller-based electric screen and does not use side-mounted tab tensioning. Correct installation and adjustment help the material hang consistently, but customers specifically requiring a tensioned surface should compare it with a dedicated tab-tensioned screen.
